Job Description

The Department of Quality Regulatory Risk and Safety at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Senior Staff Associate / Performance Improvement Clinical Specialist.

The Senior Staff Associate/Performance Improvement Clinical Specialist reports to the Director of Performance Improvement (PI) and will be responsible for clinical rounding, liaison to nursing and nursing PI, addressing clinical issues, developing and leading PI initiatives to improve patient safety, quality, efficiency and satisfaction.

The successful candidate will maintain a New York State Registered Nurse License and will use their clinical experience to set the standard for continuous performance improvement. The successful candidate will also be responsible for a range of projects including but not limited to:
  • Conducting event investigations and focused medical record reviews and collecting and assembling results and data
  • Presenting findings in narrative, statistical and graphic formats
  • Leading work groups on performance improvement initiatives
  • Coordinating departmental PI and other meetings
  • Provide clinical expertise for hospital and departmental performance improvement projects
  • Perform medical records reviews for quality measures, sepsis, patient complaints and regulatory investigations, and identify and investigate process variation
  • Develop corrective actions and improvement strategies
  • Monitor and follow up on findings and present orally and in writing
  • Assist clinical departments, to conduct PI meetings (agendas, minutes, statistical data, research and follow-up)
  • Analyze sentinel events by investigating, producing write-ups for root cause analysis and identifying, implementing and monitoring risk reduction strategies


Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • New York State Registered Nurse Licensure
  • Certification in CQI (CPHQ) within 18-months of hire
  • 3+ years of clinical and direct patient care experience, knowledge of and experience with healthcare quality improvement, including metric-driven quality and safety culture and knowledge of QAPI, and safety and healthcare regulations
  • Excellent computer skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, graphs and tables
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal and team building abilities
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently with careful attention to detail


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree
  • Green/Black Belt or Lean training
  • Prior full-time work experience in healthcare quality improvement
