We are looking for a Protection & Control Engineer to join ENMAX Power's Operations team and play a key role in supporting the safe, reliable operation of our transmission, substation, and distribution systems. In this role, you will provide specialized engineering expertise in the development and review of protection settings, technical standards, and system solutions that support operational reliability and regulatory compliance.

You will contribute to commissioning activities, outage planning, event investigations, and continuous system improvements while working alongside a team of skilled professionals. Major Responsibilities:
  • Develop, review, and approve protection settings, standards, and commissioning practices to support the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of transmission, substation, and distribution systems.
  • Provide technical expertise in transmission, substation, and distribution protection philosophies, schemes, logic, and applications. Review and approve protection-related aspects of primary metering applications.
  • Develop, review, and approve relay setting design packages for distribution, transmission, substation, and related protection applications, including technical support for commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Provide technical stewardship for protection and control assets throughout their lifecycle, including application engineering, settings management, standards development, performance monitoring, modernization initiatives, and replacement strategies.
  • Ensure protection and control programs, systems, and practices align with applicable ENMAX standards, industry practices, AESO requirements, NERC standards, and Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS).
  • Lead protection system performance reviews, disturbance investigations, misoperations analysis, root-cause determinations, and implementation of corrective actions to improve protection system reliability, security, and coordination.
  • Provide technical consultation and coordination with Operations, Planning, Telecom, SCADA, Asset Management, project teams, consultants, equipment manufacturers, and other stakeholders regarding protection and control applications and system performance.
  • Maintain accurate protection calculations, settings files, and supporting documentation in accordance with PPMP and departmental requirements.
  • Support the specification, evaluation, selection, and approval of new or replacement protective devices for transmission, substation, and distribution applications.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call program supporting operational response, incident management activities, and coordination with the System Control Centre during system events and abnormal operating conditions.


Education Required:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • P.Eng. designation with The Association of Professionals in Engineering and Geoscience in Alberta (APEGA)


Qualifications & Experience:
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in power system protection and control engineering.
  • Competent in developing and reviewing protection settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, breakers, and feeders in accordance with ENMAX practices and applicable industry standards.
  • Competent in protection coordination studies, fault analysis, and the application of arc flash mitigation principles.
  • Proficient in engineering analysis and documentation tools such as CYME, CYMETCC, CAPE, ArcFM, Mathcad, and IPS and related utility engineering software.
  • Proficient in relay configuration, settings management, and test software for major protection platforms such as SEL, GE, Hitachi, Siemens, and Omicron.
  • Strong understanding of applicable industry and reliability standards, including IEEE, IEC, NERC, and ARS.
  • Proficient in reviewing protection and control design information, including AC and DC schematics, cable tables, trip and alarm tables, wiring diagrams, and logic diagrams.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license with no more than 6 demerits and be able to attend site visits, testing activities, and field assignments as required.
