Are you a Project Engineer who knows heavy highway construction but has also spent time in the world of ITS, traffic signals, lighting and electrical systems? Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction (RLW) is looking for an experienced Project Engineer to join our Colorado team.

This is not an entry-level Project Engineer position. We are looking for someone who can take ownership of an ITS/electrical scope, work directly with the field and project team, coordinate with CDOT and other project partners, and drive issues through to resolution.

Position Description

What You'll Do

As the Project Engineer supporting our ITS and electrical work, you will help manage the technical and day-to-day coordination of these scopes on heavy civil/highway projects.

You will:

    • Take ownership of assigned ITS and electrical scopes from planning through construction and closeout.
    • Coordinate work involving traffic signals, roadway lighting, ITS systems, communications, VMS, conduit, electrical systems, tolling and vehicle detection/loops.
    • Work closely with project managers, superintendents, foremen, subcontractors and suppliers to keep work moving.
    • Coordinate with CDOT, designers, inspectors, utility companies and other project stakeholders.
    • Manage submittals, RFIs, documentation, material approvals and other project requirements.
    • Review plans, specifications and project documents and help identify potential conflicts before they impact the field.
    • Track progress, quantities, schedules and changes associated with your scope.
    • Help troubleshoot field and design issues and work with the appropriate teams to find practical solutions.
    • Make sure work is completed in accordance with project plans, specifications and CDOT requirements.

Position Requirements

What We're Looking For

    • Previous heavy civil, highway or transportation construction experience.
    • Previous experience working on CDOT projects and a solid understanding of CDOT specifications, processes and submittal requirements.
    • Strong experience with ITS and/or electrical construction.
    • Experience with some combination of traffic signals, lighting, ITS devices, communications/fiber, VMS, conduit, tolling, loops/detection systems or similar transportation electrical systems.
    • Experience coordinating subcontractors and working directly with field operations.
    • Ability to read and understand construction plans and specifications.
    • Strong organization and documentation skills.
    • Someone who can work independently, take ownership and follow an issue all the way through resolution.
    • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with everyone from craft and field leadership to engineers, inspectors, subcontractors and the owner.
    • Previous Project Engineer experience with the ability to operate beyond the entry level.
