About Your Role
CMTS is seeking a highly motivated Project Engineer III - Sustainability to support the BuildLACCD Program Management Office in Los Angeles, CA. This role provides technical and engineering support for capital construction, modernization, and sustainability projects tied to the Los Angeles Community College District's bond-funded program.
The Project Engineer III will coordinate with project managers, construction managers, contractors, architects, engineers, inspectors, consultants, and college staff to support project delivery from planning and design through construction, commissioning, and closeout. This position will also support sustainability-focused projects including energy systems, LED lighting, building management systems, central plant decarbonization, renewable energy, microgrid, PV, BESS, and EV charging station projects.
Education Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or a related field
- Four additional years of qualifying experience beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for the required education
What You'll Need to Get the Job Done
- Minimum seven (7) years of professional experience in a similar construction, engineering, or project engineering role
- Experience supporting capital construction, modernization, or infrastructure projects
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and shop drawings
- Experience reviewing RFIs, submittals, change orders, field orders, and project documentation
- Experience coordinating with contractors, architects, engineers, inspectors, consultants, and project stakeholders
- Ability to work in a team environment and take initiative
- Ability to effectively manage daily work efforts in a fast-paced environment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Experience maintaining project files in both electronic and paper formats
- Knowledge of construction contracts, project documentation, and risk management processes
What Will Make You Stand Out
- Experience on educational facility programs or projects
- Experience with Division of the State Architect projects
- Experience in all phases of the project lifecycle, including master planning, design, construction, commissioning, and closeout
- Professional Engineer License
- Certified Construction Manager certification
- Similar professional construction or engineering credentials
- Experience with sustainability projects, energy efficiency, renewable energy, or decarbonization projects
- Experience with Energy Information System platforms, LED lighting, Building Management Systems, central plant/chiller systems, PV, BESS, microgrids, or EV charging stations
What You'll Do
- Provide technical and engineering support to the BuildLACCD Program Management Office, Project Managers, and Construction Managers
- Coordinate with PMO staff, College Project Teams, contractors, architects, engineers, inspectors, consultants, and college staff
- Participate in and occasionally lead design or construction meetings
- Perform field checks on construction, demolition, rehabilitation, alteration, addition, or repair projects
- Verify compliance with job specifications, plans, College standards, and DSA requirements
- Read and interpret construction plans and shop drawings
- Prepare written materials including correspondence, reports, procedures, and guidelines
- Support weekly and monthly project status reports and photo reports
- Review, estimate, negotiate, and process construction change orders and construction field orders
- Review and enforce construction and professional services contracts
- Manage and direct contractors and outside consultants, including reviewing and approving invoices
- Assess project risks and develop risk registers with mitigation strategies
- Facilitate resolution of construction and design issues
- Coordinate with architects for timely and accurate responses to RFIs, submittals, and Construction Change Documents
- Generate and distribute meeting minutes for construction and design meetings
- Confirm contractor maintenance of record drawings prior to monthly progress payments
- Maintain project files in both electronic and paper formats
- Review submittals for conformance to plans and specifications
- Generate and draft Proposed Board Actions
- Prepare scopes of work and project status reports for consultant and contractor solicitations
- Perform other job-related duties or projects as assigned
