Product Engineer - Electrical/Electronic | Exterior LightingOverview / Summary We are seeking an experienced Product Engineer specializing in Electrical/Electronic Engineering with expertise in automotive exterior lighting systems. This role serves as a multidisciplinary technical lead across mechanical, electrical, software, systems, and optical engineering.
The engineer will support the design, development, integration, validation, and launch of exterior lighting systems and components, including headlamps, taillamps, center high-mounted stop lamps (CHMSL), fog lamps, and license plate lamps. The role involves collaboration with cross-functional teams and suppliers to deliver robust, manufacturable lighting systems at the vehicle level.
This is a hybrid position with four days per week in the office.
Key Responsibilities - Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver robust lighting systems at the vehicle level.
- Evaluate and validate system interfaces for lighting components.
- Manage supplier deliverables and confirm hardware/software interfaces.
- Manage system delivery and interface points between multiple internal and external customers.
- Write and validate embedded C/C++ code for LIN/CAN network integration, diagnostic stacks, thermal foldback routines, and lighting animations.
- Perform system testing using CAN-based tools and review supplier test cases.
- Develop schematics, layout recommendations, and component selections for LED driver boards, power regulation circuits, and EMC filtering.
- Support software architecture compliance with AUTOSAR standards, functional safety requirements, and cybersecurity requirements.
- Perform thermal FEA modeling, circuit worst-case analysis (WCA), and electrical stress testing.
- Review and sign off CAD in Teamcenter.
- Perform and/or review technical analyses of component and system functional and packaging studies, including dimensional stackups, GD&T layouts, CAE analyses, dynamic calculations, and simulations.
- Participate in technical design reviews.
- Develop lighting system documentation, including DFMEAs, SCCAFs, boundary diagrams, P-diagrams, and DVP&Rs.
- Lead design reviews based on Failure Mode Avoidance.
- Develop Engineering Statements of Work (ESOW) and engineering concepts.
- Participate in sourcing activities, including piece cost and tooling cost reviews.
- Identify required validation, durability, and functional testing.
- Address technical issues through root cause analysis, including 8D and 3x5Why methodologies, and implement permanent corrective actions.
- Apply Six Sigma principles to engineering activities.
- Collaborate with supplier technical teams and provide technical assistance through the supplier engagement process.
- Create and present technical presentations for peer and management reviews.
- Travel to supplier manufacturing and testing sites when required.
- Travel to North American manufacturing plants when required.
- Benchmark components and integrate CAD studies to support and drive design improvements.
- Manage multiple issues effectively and efficiently while demonstrating initiative and prioritizing workload.
Required Qualifications - Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in the design, development, or launch of automotive lighting or similar components.
- Experience with software development for automotive electronics.
- Experience with software testing and system testing using CAN-based tools.
- Experience in electrical engineering, including management of supplier deliverables and hardware/software interfaces.
- Experience in systems engineering and managing system delivery and interface points.
- CAD experience with tools such as CATIA, 3DX, or Teamcenter.
- Familiarity with CAE tools and software.
- Experience with benchmarking and CAD studies.
- Experience with software development and testing.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, as well as Microsoft Teams and SharePoint.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
- Ability to work effectively in a fluid environment where vehicle targets, size, appearance, and manufacturing location may not always be known.
Preferred Qualifications - Master of Science in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering.
- 7+ years of relevant experience.
- Experience in the design and release of exterior lighting.
- Software literacy and mechatronics experience.
- Strong understanding of statistical analysis.
- Experience with 8D and 5Why corrective action and problem-solving methodologies.
- Experience with DFMEAs, PFMEAs, and SCCAFs.
- Detailed understanding of materials, manufacturing technologies, and GD&T.
- Experience with complex system problem-solving where limited standardization exists.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to adapt to a variety of applications and technical issues as required.
