Full Job Description

Job Description

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Austin Technical Center three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business if more than 3 days].

The Role

The Privacy by Design Engineering Manager leads a dedicated privacy engineering function responsible for embedding privacy, data protection, and regulatory compliance directly into the design and delivery of enterprise data, analytics, AI platforms, and vehicle systems. This role is accountable for people leadership, technical direction, and operational execution, ensuring privacy-by-design is applied consistently, early, and at scale across both digital and vehicle domains.

The manager partners closely with Legal, Privacy, Cybersecurity, Data Governance, Product, and Vehicle Engineering teams to translate regulatory, policy, and risk requirements into reusable technical solutions. This role establishes the operating model, standards, and engineering practices that enable teams to safely use personal, sensitive, and regulated data while reducing enterprise risk and improving audit readiness.

Vehicle Data Scope Clarification: This role explicitly includes responsibility for privacy-by-design as it applies to vehicle-generated data and vehicle software systems, not just traditional IT or analytics platforms. The role partners with vehicle engineering, embedded software, and systems teams to ensure privacy requirements are integrated into vehicle design and development processes, including vehicle identifiers, telemetry, diagnostics, sensor data, and downstream data flows. The scope spans the full vehicle data lifecycle—from in-vehicle data generation through backend ingestion, analytics, AI use, and external data sharing—ensuring privacy protections are engineered into vehicle platforms from the outset.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and manage a team of privacy engineers delivering privacy-by-design solutions across enterprise platforms and vehicle systems
  • Define the vision, roadmap, and operating model for the privacy engineering function
  • Partner with Legal, Privacy, Cybersecurity, and Data Governance leadership to translate regulatory and policy requirements into scalable engineering controls
  • Oversee the design and implementation of privacy-preserving solutions such as alternate identifiers, masking, tokenization, obfuscation, access controls, and DLP integrations
  • Establish privacy-by-design standards for data ingestion, processing, storage, sharing, and retention
  • Embed privacy engineering early in product, platform, AI, and vehicle development lifecycles
  • Partner with vehicle engineering teams to embed privacy-by-design into vehicle design and development processes
  • Drive development of reusable privacy services, APIs, and primitives
  • Provide escalation support for high-risk PI, SPI, and regulated data use cases
  • Support audit and regulatory activities with demonstrable technical controls
  • Mentor and develop privacy engineering talent
  • Impact and Outcomes:
  • Reduced enterprise privacy and regulatory risk
  • Faster delivery of compliant data, AI, and vehicle solutions
  • Improved audit readiness and regulatory defensibility
  • A mature, scalable privacy engineering capability

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field
  • 8+ years experience in engineering or architecture roles
  • 3+ years experience leading technical teams
  • Experience designing privacy, security, or governance automated controls at enterprise scale
  • Strong understanding of privacy-by-design, governance and privacy principles
  • Experience working with legal, privacy, or compliance stakeholders

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience building or scaling a privacy engineering or governance function
  • Familiarity with global privacy regulations (GDPR, EU Data Act, EU AI Act, CCPA/CPRA, DROP, other data regulations)
  • Experience with cloud data and analytics platforms
  • Experience supporting AI or vehicle data platforms with automated embedded governance

Company Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate.
