Job Description:About the Role:As Principal Product Designer - Market Data, you will own the design strategy for our Market Data platform-the real-time quotes, charting, watchlists, screeners, and visualization systems that power how millions of people read and act on financial markets across The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, MarketWatch, and Investor's Business Daily. This is a senior individual-contributor role for someone who sets direction across our financial brands and is the go-to design expert for how Dow Jones presents market data.
Market Data connects across every one of our financial brands, and this role sets the design strategy that spans all of them. Your decisions will establish shared patterns-for quotes, charts, tables, portfolios, and alerts-that these brands build on. You will own the direction for how investors of every kind, from first-time savers to sophisticated professionals, interpret dense, fast-moving data and turn it into confident decisions, balancing the distinct needs of each brand against the consistency and quality users expect wherever they encounter our data.
And this reach won't stop at the consumer. Market and pricing data runs across much of Dow Jones-so your influence will extend well beyond the consumer brands into our professional and enterprise products, from Factiva and Dow Jones Risk & Compliance to Dow Jones Energy, wherever market data underpins the experience. Where data meets the broader product, you will be the design lead who makes it cohere.
This is a role of real influence and scope. You will shape strategy with senior leadership, resolve tension between individual brand priorities and platform consistency, define the market-data patterns that live in our Index Design System, and mentor senior designers across the financial brands. You will be the design authority for your domain-navigating ambiguity and setting the standard others in your area build on.
You will report to the VP of Product Design within the Design & Research organization.
You Will:- Own the design strategy for the Market Data platform across our financial brands-setting a coherent, multi-year direction for quotes, charting, watchlists, screeners, portfolios, and data visualization that spans The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, MarketWatch, and IBD, and connecting it to measurable outcomes like engagement, retention, and revenue
- Shape strategy with senior leadership.Present your design direction for the Market Data platform to senior design, product, and business leaders-and to executives where the work warrants-building the partnerships that advance it across brands and making the case for how well-designed data experiences create competitive advantage
- Solve the hard, ambiguous problems in your domain-developing new patterns, methods, and approaches for presenting complex financial information across multiple brands, and building a deep understanding of the problem space that lets you see opportunities ahead
- Shape the market-data patterns in our Index Design System Establish the charting, data-table, real-time, and visualization standards that become the norm across the financial brands-knowing when consistency serves the user and when a brand's audience warrants a tailored approach-and help adjacent teams adopt and evolve them
- Extend your influence beyond our consumer brands into the wider portfolio-the professional and enterprise products, from Factiva and Risk & Compliance to Newswires and OPIS, where market and pricing data is just as central-so the experiences built on our data share the same clarity, rigor, and craft. Be the design lead wherever data shapes the product
- Set a high bar for craft. Define what excellence looks like for dense, real-time financial information-typography, information density, motion, and the accessibility of complex tables and charts-and ensure consistent quality across the brands through design reviews and audits
- Connect design to outcomes. Partner with Research and analytics to tie your decisions to engagement, retention, and subscription metrics, and help teams across the financial brands understand which measures matter for market-data experiences
- Mentor and grow senior designers across the financial brands, shape a strong design culture, and strengthen the talent pipeline through the standards you set and the craft you share
You Have:- 10+ years of product design experience, including significant time owning complex, systems-level or platform work, with a track record of setting design direction that spans multiple products or brands
- Deep expertise designing data-rich experiences-financial data, analytics, dashboards, data visualization, or other complex information display-where clarity, density, and trust matter as much as visual polish
- A portfolio that demonstrates strategic impact across multiple products or brands: platform or design-system contributions, cross-team pattern-setting, and strong end-to-end craft on sophisticated products
- A proven ability to influence senior stakeholders, translating design strategy into business terms and building alignment across teams whose priorities compete
- Mastery of data visualization and information design-charting, tables, real-time data, progressive disclosure-and the judgment to know when complexity serves the user and when it gets in the way
- Strong systems thinking and deep experience with design systems, including establishing patterns that other teams adopt and evolve
- Excellence in Figma, with the ability to set standards for design communication, specifications, and documentation across teams
- A deep command of design fundamentals and accessibility standards (WCAG), with particular fluency in making dense, complex data usable for everyone
- A track record of mentoring designers and helping raise the craft and quality of the teams around you
- Comfort operating in ambiguity-setting direction in your domain amid shifting priorities and emerging technology, and acting as the go-to expert others turn to
- Bachelor's degree in Design, HCI, related field -OR- equivalent experience
Nice to Have- Experience designing for financial services, investing, trading, or fintech products
- Familiarity with real-time or streaming data systems and the constraints they place on design
- Working knowledge of financial concepts-markets, instruments, portfolio construction-sufficient to partner deeply with domain experts
- Background in news media, publishing, or other content-heavy products
- Experience designing across a multi-brand portfolio
- Experience contributing meaningfully to a design system
- An external presence through speaking or writing on data visualization, information design, or design at scale
- International or cross-cultural design experience
