Full Job Description
Job Description

This role evaluates digital twins and related digital engineering systems used to support engineering, business, safety, and lifecycle decisions.

The successful candidate will define how confidence in digital twins should be evaluated. This includes the technical basis of the digital representation, the quality and relevance of supporting data, and the processes used to maintain confidence as the system evolves.

A core requirement of this role is demonstrated experience in Verification & Validation (V&V), governance, and lifecycle assurance of simulations and digital engineering methods. The role treats digital twins as technical systems that may include models, data, software, connected assets, and operational processes.

This role requires experience in modeling and simulation, data integration, engineering analysis, AI and analytics, connected systems, and standards. Digital twin confidence depends on the model and the surrounding technical context. The goal is to help customers make credible decisions for design, certification support, operations, maintenance, and lifecycle management.

The Principal Engineer will help build this capability within UL Solutions. This person will apply sound engineering judgment, support customer and market learning, and turn digital twin assurance concepts into guidance customers can understand and use.

Responsibilities

Digital Twin Assurance Capability Development
  • Build technical capability in digital twin assurance.
  • Establish practical methods to evaluate confidence in models, data, connected systems, and lifecycle processes.
  • Define fit-for-purpose criteria for digital twin uses across design, certification support, operations, maintenance, and decision-making.
  • Develop repeatable technical practices that can be adapted across industries and customer needs.
  • Work with customers and internal teams to identify needs and improve technical approaches.

Modeling, Simulation, and Digital Engineering Methods
  • Apply modeling and simulation methods to digital twin evaluations, including physics-based, empirical, reduced-order, and AI-enabled approaches.
  • Use V&V practices to connect assumptions, evidence, and intended decisions.
  • Evaluate uncertainty, limitations, and evidence needs for the intended use of the digital twin.
  • Assess the credibility and appropriate use of AI-enabled methods in digital engineering applications.

Digital Twin Systems and Lifecycle Assurance
  • Evaluate digital twins as systems that combine models, data, software, connected assets, and operational processes.
  • Assess how changes to the physical system, data environment, or software environment may affect confidence over time.
  • Define lifecycle requirements for maintaining trust as use cases and operating conditions change.

Strategy, Standards, and Market Engagement
  • Identify technologies, standards, and market needs related to digital twins, simulation credibility, connected products, and lifecycle assurance.
  • Turn customer needs into technical guidance and repeatable ways of working.
  • Represent UL Solutions in industry working groups, technical committees, standards development, and conferences.

Stakeholder and Customer Engagement
  • Collaborate with modeling and simulation, R&D, certification, testing, software, cybersecurity, data science, and business teams.
  • Engage customers to understand technical challenges and explain how digital twin assurance supports credible decisions.
  • Advise customers on modeling approach, data needs, system context, and validation planning.
  • Provide technical guidance for proposals, early engagements, and customer discussions.

Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, data science, or a related technical field.
  • Advanced degree preferred.

Experience
  • 10+ years of engineering experience in modeling and simulation, digital engineering, systems engineering, connected products, or related fields.
  • Recent experience developing, evaluating, deploying, or governing digital twins or related digital engineering systems.
  • Experience developing validation methods for digital models, data-driven systems, software-controlled systems, or connected systems.
  • Experience turning technical methods into practical guidance, repeatable practices, or customer-facing technical work.

Technical Skills
  • Modeling and simulation, including CFD, FEA, system simulation, reduced-order modeling, or hybrid modeling approaches.
  • Verification and validation of digital models, including ASME V&V methods, model credibility, uncertainty quantification, and fitness-for-purpose assessment.

Digital twin systems, including connected data sources, software processes, configuration management, and lifecycle governance.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and conformity-assessment principles.

Critical Competencies
  • Technical judgment in digital twin assurance, V&V, lifecycle governance, and service development.
  • Ability to turn complex technical concepts into guidance customers can understand and use.
  • Clear communication with technical, commercial, and executive audiences.
  • Ability to lead across teams and influence without authority.
