Full Job Description
We're looking for a Principal Data Scientist to set and drive the scientific vision for how Brightly turns asset, maintenance, and operational data into industry-defining intelligence. This is a senior technical role for someone who operates fluidly across rigorous applied data science, modern ML/AI systems, and ambitious frontier bets.
Beyond leading our core data science practice - predictive maintenance, asset health, failure prediction, capital forecasting, and decision optimization - you'll spearhead two strategic initiatives that differentiate Brightly in the market: building digital twins of physical assets and exploring custom foundation models for assets, buildings, and the built environment. You'll be a senior technical voice in the company, driving strategy alongside product and engineering leadership while staying close enough to the work to set a high technical bar.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
* Define data science and AI strategy: Build a multi-year roadmap that connects data to clear customer and business outcomes. Align priorities with Siemens AI initiatives.
* Advance core modeling capabilities: Deliver solutions in predictive maintenance, failure prediction, asset health, capital planning, and anomaly detection.
* Develop digital twin capabilities: Lead modeling approaches that represent physical assets using operational, sensor, and engineering data. Enable simulation, forecasting, and decision support.
* Drive foundation model innovation: Evaluate and develop domain-specific models trained on asset and maintenance datasets. Identify high-value applications such as copilots and intelligent retrieval systems.
* Partner across Siemens: Collaborate with global teams across Smart Infrastructure and Digital Industries to share data, models, and best practices.
* Operationalize machine learning systems: Work with ML engineering and product teams to deploy scalable, reliable models. Focus on monitoring, performance, and continuous improvement.
* Ensure responsible AI practices: Lead efforts in model governance, fairness, privacy, and security aligned with enterprise standards.
This is a remotely based role in the US.
Qualified Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States and will not require employer sponsored work authorization now or in the future for employment in the United States.
WHAT YOU NEED
* Advanced degree (PhD or MS) in computer science, statistics, machine learning, operations research, applied mathematics, engineering, or a related quantitative field.
* 10+ years of experience in data science or machine learning.
* Strong expertise in: Statistical modeling and machine learning, time series and predictive modeling, and deep learning and modern generative AI (LLMs, RAG, evaluation)
* Proven ability to translate complex problems into practical, scalable solutions
* Experience working across teams, organizations, or external partners
* Good communication skills and executive presence
WHAT MAKES YOU A STANDOUT
* Experience with digital twins, simulation, or physics-informed modeling
* Experience building or fine-tuning foundation models on proprietary data
* Background in IoT, predictive maintenance, asset management, or industrial systems
* Experience in large, global organizations
* Familiarity with enterprise AI tradeoffs (build vs. buy vs. partner)
