Principal Corrosion Engineering Aide positions perform a variety of subprofessional corrosion engineering work of intermediate difficulty in connection with monitoring, inspection, data acquisition and interpretation; compile, collect, and interpret corrosion data; record, analyze, and interpret test data such as pipe-to-soil potentials and stray currents resistivity; investigate corrosion causes and mechanisms; provide technical assistance on electrical problems and protective coating issues; assist in the development of specifications and drawings to simplify operation and maintenance of cathodic protection systems and process equipment for corrosion control purposes; assist Corrosion Engineers with corrosion control inspections; lead/train Senior Corrosion Engineering Aides; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTES:
  • Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
    • 3.5% effective 7/1/27
    • 2% effective 7/1/28
    • 2% effective 1/1/29
  • Eligible benefited employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Principal Corrosion Engineering Aide employees may be required to work at heights in excess of 100 feet, walk in rough terrain in excess of four miles, work with high voltage electricity, and/or work in confined spaces for extended amounts of time. A confined space certification must be obtained within 6 months from being hired.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
EDUCATION: You must meet ONE of the following options:
  1. Completion of a minimum of 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units in engineering, chemistry, or physics.
  2. A National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) CP-1 (CP Tester) or higher Certification.

NOTE:

  • Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for education lacked on a year-for-year basis. One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units.


EXPERIENCE: Three years of full-time corrosion engineering experience in cathodic protection.
NOTE:

  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.


LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • A National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) Certification in a specialty field.
