Job DescriptionAs a Principal Application Architect at RBC with a focus on cryptocurrency and digital assets, you will lead architecture direction at the intersection of traditional enterprise application development and decentralized technologies. You will be pivotal in developing patterns and setting architecture and technology standards for how RBC designs, builds, and operates blockchain-based systems, trading platforms, custody solutions, and digital asset infrastructure. This role combines the breadth of enterprise application architecture with deep expertise in the crypto ecosystem, ensuring that digital asset initiatives are built on robust, scalable, and compliant foundations that align with RBC's broader technology strategy. You will drive engineering excellence across cross-line-of-business initiatives while translating complex blockchain and digital asset requirements into well-architected solutions that integrate seamlessly with traditional banking systems.
- Drive the adoption of best practices in application architecture and development processes with a focus on cryptocurrency and digital asset platforms, driving engineering excellence, security, and scalability.
- Support architecture design and governance across multiple lines of business, including stablecoins, trading platforms, custody solutions, and payment rails.
- Define and evangelize architectural patterns, standards, and best practices for integrating blockchain technologies, smart contracts, and digital wallets into the enterprise application landscape.
- Collaborate closely with business stakeholders, product teams, and technology leaders to translate strategic objectives into comprehensive architecture roadmaps and technical solutions.
- Ensure architecture compliance with regulatory requirements including AML/KYC, securities regulations, banking standards, and jurisdiction-specific crypto regulations while adhering to enterprise governance.
- Simplify processes and systems focused on digital asset integration, maximizing throughput and removing bottlenecks to developer productivity while maintaining compliance with enterprise patterns and standards.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to developers and architects working on blockchain and cryptocurrency solutions, fostering a culture of learning, innovation, and engineering excellence.
Must have:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Extensive experience in enterprise application architecture with a proven track record of delivering large-scale systems, with at least 3+ years focused on blockchain, cryptocurrency, or digital assets.
- Deep technical expertise in blockchain platforms (Ethereum, Bitcoin), consensus mechanisms, smart contract development, and distributed ledger technologies.
- Proficiency in a variety of programming languages and technologies, with strong understanding of enterprise integration patterns, API design, microservices architecture, and cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex blockchain concepts to non-technical executives and lead cross-department initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and coach teams, and experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and DevSecOps in regulated environments.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with stablecoin architectures, tokenization frameworks, atomic swaps, cross-chain bridges, or Layer-2 scaling solutions (Lightning Network, Polygon, Optimism).
- Knowledge of cryptographic primitives, zero-knowledge proofs, multi-party computation (MPC), hardware security modules (HSMs), and secure key management systems.
- Understanding of DeFi protocols, decentralized exchanges, or smart contract security auditing.
- Experience with Generative AI and how it can be applied to accelerate development, architecture analysis, and innovation in the digital assets space.
