Full Job Description
Your role and responsibilities:

As a Photonics Data Analysis Engineer, you will join our Test and Measurement team to build the software that drives the analysis and measurement of on-chip photonic devices-the foundational building blocks of Xanadu's Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computer. This role requires both the ability to interpret physical data as well as strong software engineering skills.

We are particularly looking to expand our team's skill set in areas around visualization of physical data and results and automation of analysis. So candidates who possess experience in these areas will be highly valued. However, the full scope of this role can touch everything between the experimental data acquisition and the resulting engineering design decisions. Examples of the work our team engages in include:
  • Applying advanced mathematical, physical, and statistical skills to develop new algorithms and maintain existing ones.
  • Developing and maintaining a data visualization platform that engineers can use to make critical engineering decisions.
  • Assigning credible intervals to derived metrics of the analysis and ascertain what conclusions are able to be drawn from results of analysis.
  • Forecasting uncertainties of proposed experimental designs to measure photonic device performance at bleeding edge precision.
  • Debugging results of analysis at each step in the process - determining if unexpected results are due to software failure, experimental failure or physical properties in the device.

While theoretical and experimental experience will be valuable, you should be comfortable working in a primarily software role.

Basic qualifications and experience:

Strong programming skills:
  • Professional experience with data visualization and reporting in industry context.
  • Fluency with python data analysis libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, and pandas.
  • Fluency with python data structures and software design principles.
  • Experience with Git and the pull request workflow.
  • Applicants will be expected to demonstrate proficiency writing python code.
  • 1+ years of experience in a professional software development environment or formal training in software engineering/computer science.
  • Understanding of the full software development lifecycle, including version control, code review, testing, continuous integration, logging, and documentation.

Physical/Statistical Background:
  • Strong foundational understanding of photonics, optical physics, quantum physics, or analogous fields.
  • Strong statistical and mathematical intuition, with an understanding of concepts like model selection, propagation of uncertainty and optimization.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.

Preferred qualifications and experience:
  • Masters or PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Engineering or related field.
  • Experience with data dashboarding platforms like Panel, Dash, Tableau or others.
  • Experience in Javascript or Python based web development.
  • Demonstrated experience creating data visualization tools for large datasets.
  • Experience with data-engineering and database design.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced research environment.
  • Direct experience with optical or photonic experiment and theory, understanding of concepts like resonance, scattering theory and coupled-mode theory.

This is for a new position. Your base salary will be determined based on your location, experience, and internal benchmarks. The base salary range is 100,000 - 140,000 CAD. You will also be eligible for equity and benefits.
