Pharmacist Specialist - RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, the Pharmacist Specialist plays a critical role in delivering comprehensive pharmaceutical care across the hospital setting. With a focus on critical care and emergency medicine, they provide specialized clinical pharmacy services to patients across all age groups while exercising considerable independent clinical decision-making. They are responsible for medication preparation, dispensing, monitoring, medication utilization, education, and quality improvement while collaborating closely with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and interdisciplinary care teams.

A typical day for a Pharmacist Specialist may include:
  • Provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients across all age groups, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and neonatal populations
  • Provides clinical pharmacy services within their area of specialization, including preparation, dispensing, and monitoring of medications and IV admixtures
  • Exercises independent clinical judgment when evaluating medication therapy, supporting safe prescribing, and monitoring medication effectiveness
  • Participates in multidisciplinary patient care rounds and collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare practitioners to optimize medication therapy
  • Furnishes timely and accurate clinical medication information to physicians, pharmacy personnel, healthcare practitioners, and patients
  • Assists the Director, Assistant Director of Pharmacy, and Clinical Coordinator with the coordination and supervision of clinical pharmacy activities
  • Participates in quality improvement and quality assurance initiatives related to the provision of pharmaceutical care
  • Plans, organizes, analyzes, and compiles medication utilization programs and assists with the implementation of cost containment initiatives and pharmacy research
  • Participates in medication error and adverse drug reaction reporting programs to support patient safety and risk reduction
  • Ensures compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, medication management requirements, and applicable departmental policies and procedures
  • Provides ongoing education and training to pharmacy staff, pharmacy residents, students, nursing staff, and medical staff
  • Assists with the orientation and training of new employees and supports organization- and department-specific educational requirements
  • Promotes positive working relationships and actively contributes to a collaborative and supportive pharmacy environment

To be considered for this Pharmacist Specialist opportunity:
  • Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree
  • Successful completion of a Post Graduate Year 1 Pharmacy Residency (PGY1) required
  • Successful completion of a Post Graduate Year 2 Pharmacy Residency (PGY2) in Critical Care or Emergency Medicine preferred
  • Board Certification in Critical Care or Emergency Medicine preferred
  • Must hold a current New Jersey State Registered Pharmacist license in good standing or be eligible for licensure
  • Familiarity with all phases of hospital pharmacy practice and working knowledge of public health matters, as well as federal and state laws governing professional and hospital pharmacy practice
  • Understanding of the role of the hospital pharmacy department and its interrelationships with other hospital departments and functions
