Position Specific Description

The PGD Engineer - RSO functions as the principal technical resource, operational subject matter expert, and coordination lead for the Renewable Substation Operations team. This role requires a strong foundation in substation operations and protection systems, with responsibility for ensuring the RSO team maintains operational readiness, technical proficiency, and continuous improvement across all facets of renewable substation monitoring and control.

Core Responsibilities

Technical Mentorship
  • Serve as the primary technical mentor for RSO operators, providing guidance on substation operations, protection schemes, and system monitoring best practices.
  • Lead the onboarding and qualification process for new RSO operators, ensuring each operator achieves verified operational readiness prior to independent desk coverage.
  • Support Shift Leads on monthly one-on-one performance reviews with RSO operators to assess competency, address operational challenges, and deliver structured, constructive feedback.


Operational Oversight & Quality Assurance
  • Monitor alarm management practices to ensure timely, accurate operator response in accordance with established procedures and reliability standards.
  • Verify that RSO operators maintain proper system readiness, including confirmed availability status within Cisco Finesse, to support uninterrupted call response and desk coverage.
  • Provide qualified desk coverage during unplanned absences or periods of high operational demand to ensure continuity of RSO operations.
  • Support and troubleshoot operator issues with operational tools, SCADA systems, and communication platforms.


Engineering Analysis & Process Improvement
  • Review, analyze, and trend operational trips and abnormal events to identify root causes and drive improvements in operator performance, operational processes, and tooling effectiveness.
  • Retrieve and process Digital Fault Recorder (DFR) data in response to Requests for Information (RFIs), ensuring accurate and timely data delivery to requesting parties.
  • Provide direct technical support for complex or high-risk outage coordination, including ERCOT and PMI-related outages.


Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Represent the RSO team in recurring operational, engineering, and leadership meetings, serving as the team's technical liaison across organizational functions.


Additional Qualifications
  • Substation operations or engineering experience strongly preferred, including familiarity with protection and control systems, switching operations, and substation commissioning or maintenance practices.
  • Experience with SCADA platforms, alarm management systems, and digital fault recording equipment.
  • Knowledge of NERC reliability standards applicable to Generator Owners and Generator Operators.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and cross-functional coordination skills.
