Full Job Description
Position Summary

Zachry Construction is seeking an experienced Party Chief to lead and coordinate field survey crews on a variety of heavy civil and infrastructure projects. The Party Chief will be responsible for performing the most technically complex field surveying tasks, training survey crew members, and ensuring the accuracy, safety, and efficiency of all field operations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in survey practices, GPS and total station equipment, and topographic and construction-related surveying.

What You'll Do
  • Lead and coordinate field survey crews engaged in plane and/or geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects.
  • Participate in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers and engineers.
  • Assign and oversee field work, monitoring quality and providing feedback to crew members.
  • Train and mentor survey crew members in field procedures, equipment operation, and safety protocols.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate surveying instruments including total stations, GPS, and data collectors to measure distances, elevations, and angles.
  • Collect, record, and review field data for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare field notes, sketches, and reports; perform surveying calculations using engineering calculators and software.
  • Conduct field surveys for roads, bridges, and flood control projects, including construction staking, boundary locations, and control point establishment.
  • Research existing maps, deeds, and right-of-way documentation to support survey activities.
  • Maintain detailed records of field data, project files, and survey indexing systems.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Familiarity with subdivision and boundary laws, regulations, and industry surveying standards.
  • Solid understanding of DOT, federal, state, and local specifications for transportation and infrastructure projects.
  • Strong commitment to safety and working knowledge of OSHA requirements.
  • Proficiency in Terramodel and other relevant survey software.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented with strong organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain.
