Full Job Description
Clinical Leadership

  • Provide real-time supervision and support to OR nursing staff, surgical technologists, and ancillary personnel.
  • Serve as the primary clinical resource during all surgical procedures; assist with patient care as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to sterile technique, infection control standards, and safety protocols.
  • Monitor patient flow and oversee timely progression of cases throughout the day.


Operational Coordination

  • Oversee daily OR schedule activities, adjusting as necessary to address add-ons, delays, staffing, and equipment issues.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia, and scheduling staff to optimize efficiency and minimize turnover time.
  • Coordinate availability of necessary equipment, instruments, implants, and supplies.
  • Assist with resolving workflow challenges and escalating issues appropriately.


Staff Management & Support

  • Provide direction, delegation, and performance feedback to OR team members.
  • Facilitate team communication, including shift huddles, updates, and handoffs.
  • Mentor new staff and support ongoing clinical education and competency development.
  • Participate in staffing decisions, including break/lunch coverage, assignments, and adjusting personnel based on surgical needs.


Quality & Compliance

  • Promote and uphold quality metrics, patient safety initiatives, and regulatory standards (AORN, CMS, Joint Commission).
  • Monitor and report safety concerns, including near misses, sentinel events, and equipment failures.
  • Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and policy updates.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and adherence to procedure count policies and timeouts.


Communication & Collaboration

  • Act as the communication hub between surgeons, anesthesia, pre-op/PACU, sterile processing, and other team members.
  • Support conflict resolution and foster a respectful, collaborative surgical environment.
  • Communicate changes in workflow, case priorities, or urgent needs promptly and professionally.


Qualifications

Required

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of perioperative nursing experience in an acute care operating room.
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support).
  • Strong clinical judgment and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and critical-thinking skills.


Physical & Working Conditions

  • Fast-paced surgical environment with extended periods of standing and frequent movement.
  • Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, and surgical equipment.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull equipment or patients per facility policy.
