Full Job Description
The New York Times Newsroom Strategy team is looking for a Strategy Manager with journalism, strategy and data experience to help shape and advance the newsroom's biggest goals. This is an important and exciting moment to work in strategy at The Times. Our journalism has never been stronger or more relevant, and our newsroom continues to expand with an ever-wider array of beats, formats and expertise. At the same time, a rapidly changing media ecosystem presents significant opportunities as well as challenges, from changing audience habits to video and A.I. The Newsroom Strategy team works with Times leaders to help the newsroom chart and implement our strategy. From coverage to audience to operations, we help identify long-term opportunities, set priorities and accomplish them. The team has helped to shape our major recent video investment; expanded our journalism with new coverage initiatives and investments in areas like Live, Well and local; and partnered with teams like Audience and Security to strengthen critical parts of our journalism operation. As a Manager on the team, you will lead projects, undertake analysis and recommend paths forward to ensure we are maximizing our impact. You'll take a reporter's eye to The Times and our priorities - spotting and investigating opportunities and challenges - and develop plans to address them. We will look to you for insightful research, data analysis and problem solving; effective partnership with stakeholders; and an enterprising and collaborative spirit. You'll work closely with colleagues across the organization - journalists, audience and data, corporate strategy, finance, product, HR and others. In all your work, you'll be rooted in our journalistic mission and the value of independence, and ensure that we are considering a wide range of perspectives from inside and outside The Times. This role reports to the deputy editor for Newsroom Strategy and is based in New York, with regular attendance in the office at least four days each week. Responsibilities: - Deliver high-quality analyses and recommendations for strategy projects: - Break down complex problems and opportunities - Conduct research and interviews - Analyze quantitative and qualitative info to uncover insights - Ideal: Analyze data using SQL and transform big data into visualizations - Develop practical solutions and plans to implement them - Build advisory relationships and trusting partnerships - Convey complex ideas in a clear and compelling way - in writing and in person - Operate in an enterprising and efficient manner with moderate oversight - Demonstrate strong journalistic and ethical judgment, and work in accordance with our journalistic values and standards Basic Qualifications: - 3+ years of relevant work experience - Experience in a journalism or other relevant media role - Experience producing strategic research and analyses, including data and financial models - Experience communicating recommendations to senior leaders in writing (e.g., memos, slide presentations) and verbally - Experience breaking down complex problems into pieces that can be solved with data, analysis, and clear assumptions - Passion for journalism and commitment to The Times' mission and values Preferred Qualifications: - Experience working in a newsroom - Deep interest in and understanding of trends and challenges facing journalism and the media industry, and The Times in particular - Sound journalistic judgment, with an eye for innovative coverage opportunities - Clear and concise communication style - Fluency in AI tools and technology - Technical data experience, including proficiency with SQL, comfort with version control (Github, code review), experience with dashboarding tools (Mode, Tableau, etc.) and familiarity with BigQuery or other big data environments REQ-020561 Additional Compensation and Benefits For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
