About the Role:

The New York Times is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager, reporting to the Director of Engineering, Games Platform, to lead a team focused on our mobile platform. In this role, you will lead and support engineers and collaborate with cross functional partners to deliver and maintain the premier destination for digital puzzle games.

This position is key to building the next generation of our Games app across iOS and Android. We see value in continued investment in Games as a standalone subscription opportunity and a valuable member of the overall NYTimes bundle, which also includes News, Cooking, Wirecutter and The Athletic. We view our mobile platform as the best opportunity for Games to continue driving engagement with our product, in addition to driving subscription growth.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters. You can typically expect to come into the office 2-3+ days/week.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead a team of iOS and Android engineers, including an Engineering Manager, utilizing core mobile technologies such as Swift and Kotlin.
  • Define and drive a multi-year technical strategy for the mobile platform, balancing feature delivery with architectural scalability.
  • Develop people and teams through coaching, mentoring and feedback
  • Work with product owners, designers, producers to deliver high quality mobile products
  • Work with native engineers and other managers across the Games team to help build reusable platform capabilities
  • Modernize our development lifecycle by scaling best practices and integrating AI-assisted tools to accelerate delivery.
  • Collaborate with the App Platforms team to help the team implement best practices around core app architecture, development workflow and coding standards.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.


Basic Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of strategic leadership experience managing high-performing native mobile engineering teams.
  • Deep technical fluency in building complex, high-performance iOS mobile apps; ability to guide both iOS and Android roadmaps.
  • Adaptable and effective in high-momentum environments
  • Proven ability to navigate technical ambiguity and drive clarity across long-term, cross-functional initiatives.
  • Advocate and facilitate continuous improvement and learning
  • Knowledgeable and passionate about AI coding tools especially when it comes to mobile development


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Track record of leveraging AI tooling to drive efficiency in complex mobile development workflows.
  • Experience partnering with web and backend engineers to build end-to-end products
  • Experience building reusable platform capabilities that amplify the effectiveness of multiple mobile native teams

Compensation and Benefits For This Role:

In addition to base salary, this role is also eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$185,000-$210,000 USD
