About the role

The Guardian is seeking a detail oriented and audience focused newsletter producer to support the growth and day to day execution of our US newsletter portfolio.

This role sits within the US audience team and reports to the head of newsletter strategy. It plays a key part in delivering and developing our newsletter offering, with a focus on audience engagement, retention and supporter growth. The producer will work closely with the head of newsletter strategy and collaborate with colleagues across the US newsroom, as well as with product, engineering, design, data and reader revenue teams.

The ideal candidate is highly organized and comfortable managing multiple workflows at once, with the ability to move quickly and calmly in a fast paced news environment. They will support daily newsletter operations as well as time sensitive sends, including our breaking news email product, and help ensure that processes run smoothly across the portfolio. They are genuinely enthusiastic about newsletters as a format, with a strong sense of what works and a habit of subscribing to and learning from a wide range of products.

We are looking for someone who is curious about audience behavior and motivated by growth. This role will involve monitoring performance, running tests and using data to inform decisions, with a focus on improving engagement and retention over time. The producer will contribute to ongoing optimization efforts and help identify opportunities to evolve our newsletter offerings, including using testing and iteration to turn a good subject line into a great one.

This is a collaborative role, requiring strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders. The producer will support marketing and promotional efforts and work with the senior newsletter editor on packaging for campaigns and cross newsletter initiatives.

We want someone who is excited about newsletters as a product and understands their role in building relationships with readers and supporting the Guardian's reader revenue model. They should be proactive, detail oriented and eager to learn, with a strong interest in developing their skills in audience strategy and newsletter production.

Key responsibilities
  • Assist with day to day scheduling, production workflows and sends across the US newsletter portfolio, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  • Execute A/B testing, monitor performance metrics and apply insights to improve engagement, retention and list growth over time.
  • Support the development and launch of new newsletters, helping to ensure smooth execution from planning through rollout.
  • Assist with marketing and promotional efforts, including advertising placements, Apple News promotions and cross newsletter campaigns, and collaborate with the senior newsletter editor on packaging for marketing initiatives.
  • Produce regular reporting on key performance indicators, including list growth, subscriber acquisition, open rates, click through rates and US audience metrics, and use insights to inform ongoing optimization and strategy.
  • Work closely with cross functional partners across editorial, reader revenue, product, engineering, design and data teams to support newsletter initiatives and align on priorities.
  • Support the operation of the breaking news email product, managing daily sends and helping refine workflows as the product evolves.

Key skills & experience
  • At least three years' experience working in a newsroom, audience team or digital media environment, ideally with exposure to newsletters or email products
  • A strong understanding of audience engagement and growth, with experience interpreting metrics such as open rates, click through rates and supporter growth
  • Experience working with email platforms such as Braze or similar tools, or a willingness to learn new systems quickly
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple workflows and deadlines in a fast paced environment
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort handling scheduling, production processes and recurring sends with a high degree of accuracy
  • Confidence working with data and using insights to inform decisions and improve performance over time
  • Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach, with the ability to work effectively across editorial, product, reader revenue, design and data teams
  • An interest in newsletters as a product and a strong understanding of their role in audience growth, retention and reader revenue
  • Ability to adapt quickly in a breaking news environment and support time sensitive sends when needed
  • A proactive and solutions oriented mindset, with a willingness to test, learn and refine processes
