Full Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY

The Product Safety Engineer supports the design, evaluation, and compliance of Applied Materials products so that they meet company, customer, and regulatory safety requirements. Working within multifunctional teams and under the mentorship of senior engineers and subject matter experts, this entry-level engineer evaluates the introduction of new technologies and their potential interaction with other systems using structured risk assessment methods such as FMEA and FTA, and helps drive corrective actions that minimize risk to employees, customers/facility, and the environment.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Participates in cross-functional evaluations of new technologies and their potential interaction with other systems using structured risk assessment methods (FMEA, FTA, HazOp, SEMI S10).
  • Assists in developing and implementing programs that minimize risk to employees, customers/facility, and the environment relating to Applied products.
  • Supports product and system safety analysis on components, subsystems, and complete systems under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Participates in compliance evaluation of products against company, industrial guidelines, standards and governmental requirements.
  • Supports design reviews from a product safety perspective, providing early input to design teams.
  • Reviews engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications to identify potential safety hazards and non-conformances.


ANALYSIS, INVESTIGATION & REPORTING
  • Builds proficiency in FMEA, FTA, HazOp, SEMI S10, 8D, and other investigation and assessment methodologies.
  • Assists in investigating incidents, concerns and various product safety events; collects and analyzes pertinent data and helps document corrective and preventive actions.
  • Tracks corrective actions arising from third-party product safety tool assessments to closure with the responsible internal organizations.
  • Maintains accurate documentation and records to support audits, certifications, and customer safety reviews.


COLLABORATION & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  • Works within multifunctional teams (design, systems, manufacturing, field service, Regional EHS and quality) to resolve safety findings during product development.
  • Supports internal and external customer inquiries on code, industry guideline or standards compliance issues, escalating complex or precedent-setting matters to senior staff.
  • Assists in preparing materials and technical inputs for company procedures and industry standards forums.
  • Develops working knowledge of applicable semiconductor equipment safety standards (e.g., SEMI S2/S8/S10, NFPA 79, EU Machinery Regulation/CE Marking, IEC 61010-1, etc.).
  • Progressively builds toward subject matter expertise in Product Safety and independent ownership of assessments and projects.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor or Master of Science in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Industrial, Safety, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 0-2 years of experience; internship in product safety, compliance, or equipment engineering preferred.
  • Foundational understanding of engineering risk assessment methods and the ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to document findings clearly for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and comfort working in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally to customer and manufacturing sites as needed.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Coursework or project experience in FMEA, FTA, hazard analysis, reliability engineering, or machine safeguarding.
  • Exposure to semiconductor capital equipment, industrial automation, or high-hazard process environments.
  • Familiarity with SEMI, NFPA, ISO, IEC, or CE regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience presenting technical findings to review boards or cross-functional stakeholders.


CAREER PATH

This role is the entry point into Applied Materials' Product Safety discipline. With experience, the engineer assumes greater independence in leading FMEA and PHA sessions, becomes the recognized subject matter expert for assigned product lines, manages complex and large-scale safety programs, represents the company in industry standards forums, and leads investigations into product safety events with global impact.

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.

For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
