Description

This role focuses on research, development, and engineering program leadership within Applied Materials' Metal Deposition Products Service Business Unit, supporting the company's installed base in the semiconductor industry. The Senior BU Focal will drive service product development process execution, Digital Twin and Fleet Validation activities, and concurrent Business Unit and Service development across the MDP/ALD portfolio. This leader will engage cross-functionally to improve service readiness, accelerate commercialization, strengthen customer adoption, and enable digital service innovation across priority platforms.

The position requires close partnership with Business Unit engineering, Service Business Unit teams, field organizations, supply chain, marketing, sales, finance, legal, and external partners to ensure service requirements are incorporated early in product development cycles. The role executes segment and functional business plans, contributes to strategy development, and communicates RD&E progress, risks, and execution status to senior executives and key stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Lead R&D and engineering program management for metal deposition service products across the MDP/ALD portfolio.
  • Drive sPDP execution across priority platforms, ensuring service deliverables, readiness milestones, risks, and dependencies are managed with clear ownership and disciplined governance.
  • Ensure service requirements, serviceability needs, reliability considerations, field readiness requirements, and lifecycle support needs are incorporated early in Business Unit development cycles.
  • Coordinate Digital Tool and Fleet Validation planning, validation, deployment, and field adoption to support digital service innovation and improved installed-base performance.
  • Support EPIC execution through concurrent Business Unit Product Development Process and Service Product Development Process development.
  • Lead customer application understanding and service product development activities to facilitate successful new product introduction and field adoption.
  • Accountable for on-time delivery, cost discipline, quality, and execution of new service products and technologies that support customer commitments, operating plans, and MDP Service Business Unit growth objectives.
  • Lead development and execution of project management practices, product lifecycle processes, continuous improvement programs, engineering change orders, and related execution mechanisms.
  • Support quality, productivity, and sustaining engineering initiatives in partnership with customers, field teams, operations, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Partner with strategic sourcing and supply chain teams to support new product-related sourcing needs and supplier readiness.
  • Lead sampling and field quality processes in close partnership with field commercial resources and customer-facing teams.
  • Translate field learning, validation results, customer feedback, and service performance data into actionable recommendations for product design, service strategy, and digital service capability development.
  • Communicate RD&E progress, execution status, risks, and decision needs to senior executives and stakeholders.

Desired Skills, Competencies, and Experience
  • Higher science or engineering degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. MS or PhD preferred, with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong domain expertise in materials, deposition, plasma, semiconductor systems, and related equipment technologies, including PVD, CVD, and ALD.
  • Semiconductor applications and service business experience preferred, especially supporting advanced integrated process equipment or installed-base service products.
  • Demonstrated new product introduction experience with a strong track record of execution, customer impact, and cross-functional delivery.
  • Strong program management, product lifecycle management, and service product development experience.
  • Customer-focused mindset with Voice of Customer expertise, strong customer acumen, and ability to convert customer and field needs into clear product and service requirements.
  • Experience coordinating Digital Tool, Fleet Validation, AI, automation, predictive analytics, equipment health monitoring, or digital service deployment is preferred.
  • Positive, hands-on, entrepreneurial attitude with the ability to build support for RD&E needs and drive alignment across stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills and interpersonal presence, with the ability to convey confidence, humility, clarity, and urgency.
  • Ability to effectively manage and deliver to multiple key performance indicators and program milestones.
  • Critical thinking and ability to influence and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams including Sales, Finance, Marketing, Strategy, Operations, Engineering, Service, and senior management.
  • Excellent personal time management, project management, prioritization, and execution discipline.

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.

For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
