This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design.

This role is a functional manager for Navigation Engineering within Advanced Concepts and Engineering, Flight Systems. Reporting directly to the Sr. Director of Flight Systems, the Navigation Engineering Manager will lead a high impact team to deliver new, state-of-the-art Navigation systems used on all Blue Origin's Space Vehicles. To be successful, the Navigation Engineering Manager will work with Business Units (a.k.a. internal customers) to understand requirements, build and manage a high-power and effective team of industry experts, ensure the team is meeting or exceeding the customers' expectations, and work with the Sr. Director and other leaders to define and execute the strategic vision of Flight Systems, all while also providing part-time direct engineering support.

A successful candidate for this role will have a working understanding of the complexities and interdependencies of Navigation Engineering, exceptional communication skills, and a proven record of successfully leading technical teams.

Responsibilities:
  • Hire and develop the very best Navigation Engineers to build an effective team
  • Drive and execute an AI strategic vision for Navigation Engineering
  • Work with the internal customers to understand expectations and scope of work for Navigation
  • Collaborate with other teams and Business Unit stakeholders
  • Develop and manage Navigation system roadmaps and technology evolution
  • Drive the Navigation Engineering team to successfully execute development plans to meet expected program milestones
  • Develop and report metrics on team performance
  • Develop multi-year resourcing level estimates for Navigation Engineering
  • Track and report key performance and schedule performance of the Nav team
  • Complete performance reviews of the Nav team
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, leadership, and mentoring to the people in the Nav team
  • Contribute individually as an engineer, approximately 50%
  • Collaborate with other members of the Flight Systems Leadership Team to develop the annual Flight Sciences Budget Operating and Capital Expenditure Budgets


Minimum Qualifications
  • MS Degree in engineering, or another technical field
  • 7-10 years of experience in Navigation Engineering
  • Experience developing, testing, and deploying navigation software through the full life cycle
  • Software development skills in C, C++, MATLAB, Python.
  • Knowledge of estimation theory and the application of this for integrating IMU outputs in algorithms such as Extended Kalman Filters.
  • Experience with DO178-C and software qualification processes


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing technical teams
  • PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with space-based applications and the challenges with sensors associated with space and launch vehicle environments.
  • Experience with IMU sensor design, calibration, characterization, and environment testing.
  • Knowledge of GPS and other complementary navigation technologies


Compensation Range for:
WA applicants is $150,743.00 - $211,039.50
