Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineers on the shop floor to manage nonconformances
  • Conduct root cause analysis for nonconformances focusing on engineering principles
  • Create repair designs and documentation for structural hardware issues
  • Evaluate design impacts on fluid operations and structural integrity
  • Work with design and quality engineers to establish effective nonconformance solutions
  • Lead investigations for recurring issues and suggest design/process improvements
  • Document engineering dispositions and repair instructions per quality standards
  • Engage directly with manufacturing to ensure correct implementation of repairs
  • Assist in first-article inspections and troubleshooting of structural issues
  • Analyze nonconformance trends and provide feedback to enhance processes

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a hardworking team of specialists, and engineers, you will help to coordinate the schedule and priorities of design work for various fluids and propulsion systems. You will share in the teams impact on all aspects of the fluids overall strategy.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work directly with manufacturing engineers and technicians on the shop floor to assess nonconformances, understand fabrication constraints, and implement repair or rework solutions in real time
  • Perform root cause analysis and disposition nonconformances (use-as-is, repair, rework, or scrap) based on engineering and structural design principles
  • Develop repair designs, including drawings, sketches, and documentation, to correct nonconforming or damaged structural hardware
  • Apply design experience to assess the impact of deviations on fluids operation, strength, stiffness, fatigue life, and overall integrity
  • Collaborate with design engineers, stress analysts, quality engineers, and manufacturing to develop practical, cost-effective disposition solutions
  • Support root cause and corrective action (RCCA) investigations for recurring nonconformances, driving improvements to design and manufacturing processes
  • Generate and maintain nonconformance documentation, engineering dispositions, and repair instructions in compliance with quality and configuration management systems
  • Partner closely with manufacturing to clarify disposition intent, walk through repair instructions, and ensure proper implementation on the shop floor
  • Support first-article inspections and production troubleshooting related to structural fit, form, and function issues
  • Identify trends in nonconformances and provide direct feedback to manufacturing and design teams to improve producibility and reduce recurrence
  • Balance schedule pressures with sound engineering judgment to ensure safety and mission success

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in fluids design, structural design, manufacturing engineering, and/or quality engineering for aerospace hardware
  • Experience with design of metallic and/or composite piece parts and assemblies
  • Familiarity with GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and ability to interpret drawings, models, and engineering specifications
  • Experience developing repair and rework solutions for nonconforming or damaged structural hardware
  • Working knowledge of design and analysis principles (loads, stress, fatigue) sufficient to assess impact of nonconformances
  • Experience working within a Material Review Board (MRB) process or similar nonconformance disposition process
  • Strong communication skills, with ability to clearly document engineering rationale and disposition decisions
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with quality, manufacturing, and design teams under time constraints
  • Ability to earn trust and maintain positive and professional relationships
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired:

  • Familiarity with analysis tools (ANSYS, or similar) to support disposition assessments
  • Experience with root cause and corrective action (RCCA) methodologies (e.g., 8D, 5-Why, fishbone)
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes (machining, forming, welding, composite layup) and their impact on nonconformance trends
  • Experience in a regulated aerospace quality environment (AS9100 or similar)
