The Role
This requisition is for an engineering manager position in the Propulsion & Reactor Engineering Planning Yard responsible for the design, maintenance, overhaul and modernization of Nimitz Class and Ford Class propulsion plants. The manager will lead a group of engineers responsible for reactor plant structures and shielding in support of the operational readiness of the aircraft carrier fleet and delivery of new construction ships through adjudication of urgent requests for engineering support. Major duties will involve managing engineers performing dynamic structural shock analyses utilizing finite element analysis methods, performing hand calculations using textbook methods, developing engineering calculation reports, and approval of these analysis products. In addition, the engineering group will be responsible for fleet support duties for the development of Ship Alterations, Nuclear Liaison Inquiries and submittal letters to Naval Reactors and the Naval Nuclear Laboratory. The group will also collaborate closely with the Design Disclosure organization checking product model and drawing products to ensure technical requirements are accurately conveyed to our customers.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
The ideal candidate will have extensive technical leadership and project management experience, advanced problem-solving abilities related to Construction and Fleet-Support for Navy vessels and a proven record of resolving complex problems with minimal supervision. Must be able to establish and maintain good working relationships with our upstream (NAVSEA and NNL) and downstream (various shipyard departments) customers. Therefore, excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary along with experience interfacing with US Government customers, the NNS shipbuilder, and ship maintenance activities such as public Naval Shipyards. Experience with structural design and maintenance of US Navy ships, including shock and vibration analysis of equipment foundations on US Navy ships, is preferred. A strong understanding of structural dynamics and stress analysis processes (using both finite element and text book methods), with an emphasis on the Dynamic Design Analysis Method and the shock requirements governed by the Ford and Nimitz Class ship specifications is a plus. Must be committed to actively leading a culturally transformative effort within their AOR. A high level of leadership engagement is required to ensure employees are cared for and developed, a collaborative environment is established between design and engineering, and that all deliverables are of the highest quality, meeting all specification/technical requirements, and completed in time to meet established schedules.
