Materials Research Engineer

As a Materials Research Engineer and key contributor to our engineering organization, you will drive the development of advanced infrastructure solutions for next-generation computing technologies, with an emphasis on liquid cooling systems. Working closely with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams, you will support research and development, product qualification, and failure analysis initiatives through rigorous testing, materials characterization, and data-driven technical insights.

Responsibilities

You will:

  • Partner with research and development teams to develop and evaluate new materials for computer hardware applications, with a focus on liquid cooling systems, while performing hands-on material characterization, testing, and analysis
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on existing and future fluid and chemical analysis instrumentation, including Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and Ion Chromatography (IC), and provide technical guidance on analytical methods and results
  • Lead and support failure analysis and product qualification activities, leveraging data-driven insights to identify root causes and improve material and system performance
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement capital equipment acquisitions and upgrades, while contributing to the development and adoption of artificial intelligence-enabled laboratory workflows
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation to communicate findings, recommendations, and project progress to stakeholders across engineering, manufacturing, and quality organizations

Essential Requirements
  • 8+ years of experience, or equivalent skill, in materials engineering, chemistry, or other related field; must include hands-on laboratory experience
  • Strong knowledge of metals, polymers, ceramics, composites, and fluids, including material properties, performance, and failure mechanisms
  • Expertise in corrosion science, coolant chemistry, fluid-material compatibility, coatings, and surface treatment technologies
  • Proficiency in two or more analytical techniques, including Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy, Liquid Chromatography, Gas Chromatography, Ion Chromatography, or Mass Spectrometry
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct materials characterization, root cause investigations, and data-driven failure analysis


Desirable Requirements
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with printed circuit board and printed circuit assembly technologies, sample preparation methods, and advanced characterization techniques such as X-ray imaging, Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, X-ray Fluorescence, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, or Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry


Compensation

Dell is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The base salary range for this position is $152,000-$209,000.
