Inside the Role
The Manufacturing Controls Engineer III serves as a technical leader responsible for the design, implementation, optimization, and support of manufacturing controls systems across machining, assembly, and production testing operations. This role leads complex automation projects, supports new product launches, drives continuous improvement initiatives, and collaborates with global engineering teams to implement innovative manufacturing technologies that improve safety, quality, productivity, and operational performance.

Position offers a starting salary range of$108,000 - $139,000 USD

What You Drive at DTNA
  • Participate and or lead a team for planning and leading complex systems and projects which include researching vendors, creating technical specifications, requesting quotations, selecting vendors, creating timelines, issuing purchase requisitions (coordinate with Purchasing), scheduling installations and tryouts, qualifying and approving equipment/tooling for projects, etc.
  • Lead the controls portion of an internal or external project.
  • Ensure engineering practices comply with government regulations and safety standards.
  • Implement and support hardware and software for PLC, CNC, HMI and Engine controls.
  • Implement and support device level networks.
  • Implement and support servo and VFD hardware and software.
  • Implement and support manufacturing monitoring systems with emphasis on interfacing to higher-level systems.
  • Independently applying processes and standards to the needs and progress of projects.
  • Responsible for funding planning and tracking of complex over-arching projects based on Daimler standard project funding principles (CAPEX, NRE, EA1, EA2, and OP) as needed.
  • Proactively manage and adopt spending plans as needed to meet cost targets.
  • Able to identify shortfalls in projects or tasks and independently develop countermeasures, resolutions and implement effectiveness.
  • Independently utilize the appropriate project management tools for your project / task.
  • Independently lead project teams with production, maintenance, product engineering, quality, suppliers, etc.
  • Independently promote continuous improvements and actively screens markets and implements.
  • Schedule time according to established job priorities. Monitor work progress and resolve problems to ensure timely completion of projects.
  • Effectively work with hourly and skilled trades union workers.
  • Must be able to provide management with regular reports / presentations on project work plans and status for information and resource management purposes.
  • Must be able to professionally represent ME and actively participate in CVDS and PPR projects.
  • Must have regular communication and collaboration with the global ME team.
  • Need to have the ability to coach, mentor, and delegate to other team members.
  • Apply controls technology to new and existing processes to provide optimal manufacturing solutions.
  • Specify, manage, and assist with control designs for new manufacturing equipment procurement.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to manufacturing operations.
  • Participate in design reviews with suppliers to develop and implement the best overall equipment design.


Core Functions
  • Equipment controls hardware & software design reviews with suppliers
  • Review engine module control changes and the impacts to our new or existing lines and make changes as needed
  • Support controls topics in assembly, machining and production test cells
  • Monitor equipment build & installation to verify they are being correctly implemented
  • Support the controls portion of a production line startup including the tracking & verification of open controls issues
  • Engineer & implement controls hardware & software changes required to an existing line for any process changes requests
  • Research & develop standards for new controls technologies


Knowledge You Should Bring
  • Requires a Bachelors Degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in controls engineering
  • At least 5 years of PLC programming (Specifically Siemens) and HMI development (Specifically HMI PRO, WinCC Flex, and TIA Portal).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with Siemens controls
  • Experience in manufacturing machining and assembly controls equipment hardware and software design practices and standards
  • At least 5 years of experience in MES systems (e.g. SISAM)
  • At least 5 years of experience in FIS systems (e.g. PRISMA)
  • At Least 5 years of experience using PC hardware and Microsoft Windows in a networked plant floor environment
  • Experience in a project lead role
  • Must be able to travel, including international (~10%)
  • Must be able to articulate technical information in written and oral communication
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Must be able to oversee activities of tradesmen and/or contractors.
  • Must be able to provide technical support to Operations, Maintenance and other functional groups on request
