Full Job Description
SMS group Inc. seeks a Manager Reconditioning and Repair to work in Valparaiso, IN. The role of the Manager Reconditioning / Repair Services is to plan, schedule, coordinate and direct all reconditioning and repair projects performed in the Valparaiso SMS workshop, from the quotation stage to customer delivery. This position is required to train, develop and maintain qualified personnel for all assigned positions within the workshop. The Manager of Reconditioning/Repair Services attends customer scheduled or emergency outages and assists with technical advice and supervision of installations, commissioning, and preventative maintenance on blast furnace and ironmaking equipment. This role will provide technical training not only for the client, but also for the field service and workshop teams of Valparaiso on specialized equipment. Specific duties include:

  • Lead and take part in the DIA (disassemble, inspect & analyze) process, and assist in preparing cost estimates of all equipment to be reconditioned or repaired in the Valparaiso workshop.
  • Plan and provide reconditioning scope reports / technical documents, based upon visual inspections of complete DIA type of inspections.
  • Interpret drawing/specifications and assign work orders and duties to the team. Supervise, lead and ensure that components are correctly and completely reconditioned / repaired in accordance with engineering BOM, machine detail drawing requirements, quality plans and company standards.
  • Meet with and inform Operations Manager daily on all matters in regard to the workshop activities and areas under his responsibility.
  • Establish or adjust work procedures when necessary to meet production schedules and optimize workflow through the shop ensuring sufficient resources are available to complete tasks in the time frame required.
  • Train, develop and maintain qualified personnel for all assigned positions within the workshop. Quarterly and annual employee performance reviews; Promotion or demotion of department employees.
  • Provide leadership within the organization while coordinating activities with project management, purchasing, sales/field service, logistics, engineering and spare parts departments.
  • Supervise and lead at customer sites where higher level authority is required to solve equipment problems, with authority to purchase additional items, direct and supervise subcontractors and assign company resources.
  • Advise customers with preventive maintenance optimization procedures in relation to specialized equipment and present new company technology to provide latest solutions; Lead training initiatives for the customer and its employees.
  • Develop technical standard operating procedures for disassembly / assembly, testing and installation for each type of equipment repaired or reconditioned in the Valparaiso workshop.


Must possess, at a minimum, a Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering and Project Management Specialization, AND at least 4 (four) years of experience in a related position. Previous work experience must have included experience with: Experience with the repair and reconditioning of Blast Furnace equipment, including field supervision; Knowledge of the Bell Less Top system equipment and general functions; Knowledge of the Blast furnace process; Knowledge of technical documentation (drawings, specifications, bill of materials, test procedures, installation procedures, maintenance procedures, overall manual, spare parts, troubleshooting) for specialized ironmaking equipment; Experience with repair and reconditioning requirements for blast furnace and ironmaking equipment; and Experience correlating different mechanical engineering requirements, such as machining, welding, heat treatments, and painting, in order to reach the equipment requirements. 3% Domestic / 2% International - Visits to customers for training applications, business meetings and inspections.
