Job Description

The Infusion Pharmacy Manager is a registered pharmacist within the department of Pharmacy who is responsible for managing oncolytic and biotech agent sterile compounding as well as day to day staffing, personnel, fiscal and operations issues for the chemotherapy pharmacy. As a front-line operations manager, this individual is a problem solver, a motivator, a coordinator, and will set the standard for excellence which is a goal of the department. Actively tracks and benchmarks the outcomes of quality programs for operational, clinical quality, and financial efficiency. Assists in the development of goals for the department and works with other managers and key individuals such as physicians, nurses, and other hospital personnel to facilitate the accomplishment of these goals. Establishes strategic relationships with University leaders/stakeholders pivotal to the advancement of pharmacy services and direct patient-care programs. Leverages these relationships to identify and implement new clinical pharmacy services as well as enhance existing programs provided by the department. This leader actively identifies practice related issues which require evaluation and facilitates clinical research projects, quality improvement initiatives, or healthcare provider education as needed to advance practice. Facilitates and supports student, resident, and pharmacist training experiences and competencies. Sets the standard for excellence for the department's ambulatory sterile compounding services and designs systems that support the infrastructure for pharmacy operations and integrated quality programs.

Essential Job Functions
  • Oversee sterile product preparations, general quality systems, and regulatory compliance to assure the provision of safe, effective, and timely medication therapy as well as integrated pharmaceutical care to the patient population seen in the University of Chicago Medical Center and Affiliate Clinicsuchossois .
  • Allocates pharmacy resources to support comprehensive pharmacy practice including pharmacy clean room programs and chemotherapy programs. Assign roles of Clinical-Staff Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians. Oversee the day to day staffing and scheduling of pharmacists and technicians in these areas. Supports the integration of staff within direct patient care teams to support medical staff, nursing, and other hospital personnel.
  • Develop standards of performance and evaluate staff work and program performance. Provides positive feedback, counseling regarding job performance including employee discipline if needed and preparation of yearly staff evaluations.
  • Maintains competent staff by coordinating training for new employees, coaching and mentoring of all employees, and routine communication to staff.
  • Maintains personal competency in the services provided within assigned practice areas. Interprets, evaluates, and accurately processes drug orders as well as engage in sterile manufacturing processes as needed. Provides coverage of staffing shortages for upcoming shifts, with anticipation and coverage plans of future staffing deficiencies.
  • Tracks and benchmarks the outcomes of chemo clinic pharmacy programs for operational, clinical quality, and financial efficiency. Actively intervenes to assure programs are aligned with department goals and are achieving desired results in quality and cost-effectiveness. Implements action plans and system changes as needed or requested.
  • Facilitates and supports student and resident experiential training opportunities as well as pharmacists and technicians training and competencies.
  • Oversee the creation and dissemination of pharmacy bulletins and education for nurses, physicians, and staff.
  • Oversee the management of chemotherapy and biotech drug operational systems and their integrated pharmacist programs.
  • Actively participates in the oversight of drug purchasing, drug usage, and drug control for assigned areas.
  • Ensures consistent departmental operations by initiating, reviewing, revising, coordinating, and enforcing department, hospital and personnel policies and procedures. Ensures employees comprehend and follow policies and procedures.
  • Promotes excellent customer service by assisting patients, co-workers, medical staff, and other healthcare providers resolve expressed concerns, demonstrating a welcoming and helpful attitude, and responding in a positive, professional, and courteous manner. Identifies customer (patient and healthcare provider) requirements, both actual and anticipated, and maintains active personal contact and rapport with potential and actual customers.
  • Establishes collaborative professional relationships with physicians, nurses, and hospital leaders to facilitate the advancement of pharmacy services and direct patient-care programs. Leverages these relationships to identify and implement new services/programs as well as enhance existing services/programs provided by the department.
  • Assures a safe, secure, and friendly environment for outpatients, visitors, and staff. Oversees the maintenance of a neat and orderly environment for assigned areas.
  • Participates in the planning and management of the pharmacy budget; assess drug therapy issues in terms of quality and cost; review protocols, orders, and formulary requests.
  • Represents Department at hospital meetings and serve as a liaison to hospital groups. Participates in committees as a representative of the department, including but not limited to the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, Chemotherapy Pharmacy Improvement Committee, , and committees related to regulatory compliance or Joint Commission standards. Communicate committee activities, actions, and resolutions accordingly.
  • Maintains knowledge of contemporary hospital practice and clinical service; trends and innovations in pharmacy leadership; and updates in traditional therapeutics, professional practice standards, or healthcare regulatory requirements. Reviews, evaluates, and communicates relevant literature related to pharmacy practice-related issues.
  • Maintains a sustained record of contribution to the total body of knowledge in pharmacy practice through presentations, publications, and professional affiliation activities. Maintain a high professional profile and active membership in the Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the University Health System Consortium, and/or a specialty organization relevant to practice area.
  • Demonstrates personal leadership qualities and business acumen essential to operate effectively within the institution and advance the profession and practice of pharmacy.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
