Full Job Description
The Laboratory Services Manager performs a variety of standardized and highly specialized assays in all sections of the bi-campus Clinical Laboratory. As Manager, the individual is responsible for technical and staff supervision, administrative management of all sections and for assuring proficiency of staff, accurate instrument operation, performance of maintenance and troubleshooting measures, quality control, quality assurance and proficiency testing. The Manager is responsible for assisting in monitoring and controlling the laboratory budget, employee relationships, customer service, performance improvement, and maintaining intra and interdepartmental communication. The Manager is also responsible for organizing the work schedule, and monitoring attendance and punctuality.

Essential Duties
  • Manages operations of the Laboratory and oversees Department performance as assigned; includes budgetary oversight.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of computer functions and for carrying out additional clerical duties to meet the needs of the Department and hospital staff. Provides administrative reports as requested. Displays flexibility to cover the Lab in emergencies and difficult staffing situations.
  • Adheres to established Hospital and Departmental policies and procedures
  • Assists the Department in meeting accreditation requirements by licensing agencies. Establishes and maintains Performance Improvement and Quality Assurance activities which support the Department and Hospital.
  • Instructs, orients and completes orientation checklist for new employees, as needed. Communicates with employees on the day-to-day operations. Reviews implemented changes with all staff.
  • Performs annual Performance Appraisal review for staff with input from direct Supervisor. Actively participates in commendations, counseling, interview and selection of employees.
  • Coordinates and integrates Department services on intradepartmental, interdepartmental and hospital-wide levels. Supports and participates in interdepartmental collaboration and problem solving.
  • Plans for provision of service through scheduling appropriate levels of qualified competent staff; organizes lab work schedule.
  • Ensures policies and procedures are in place to support scope of service.
  • Assures results are available within defined TAT guidelines by optimizing specimen collection, processing and delivery to testing sites.
  • Demonstrates willingness to take on new tasks and additional responsibilities. Assumes overall responsibility for assigned projects and timely completion of those projects. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by the Administrative Director of Laboratory Services.
  • Communicates and interacts effectively with coworkers and guests of the institution. Develops and maintains strong, positive working relationships with physicians, staff, customers and other departments.
  • Assumes ownership of customer relationships and follows Department issues through to closure.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage multiple simultaneous conflicting priorities effectively.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
  • Req High school or equivalent
  • Pref Bachelor's degree AA or BA in related field of study preferred.
  • Doctoral-level Scientist must have minimum of 1 year of experience. Master's-level Scientist must have minimum of 2 years' experience. Baccalaureate-level Scientist must have minimum of 4 years' experience.
  • Req 5 years Experience in an Acute Care Facility setting And
  • Req 2 years Experience in a senior or supervising capacity
  • Req Experience to include computer experience, inventory control/budgeting, quality assurance, performance improvement, work scheduling.
  • Req Organization/time management skills.
  • Req Demonstrates ability to utilize effective, appropriate and diplomatic oral and written communication skills.
  • Req Demonstrates ability to work independently with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Req Committed to excellence in patient care and customer service.
  • Req Must be comfortable with computers and medical terminology.
  • Req Leading/ guidance skills
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
  • Req Certified Phlebotomy Technician - CPT (CA DPH) Valid CPT I, or CPT II certification from the State of California.
  • Pref Medical Laboratory Technician - MLT (CA DPH) Or ASCP in Microbiology


The salary rate range for this position is $151,424.00 - $249,850.00.
