Job Description

Join Distribution Engineerings System Design organization and play a critical role in building the electric grid of the future. The High Tension team is seeking a highly motivated and technically proficient Manager (2H) to lead engineering activities supporting high tension customer interconnections, distributed energy resource (DER) projects, system reliability initiatives, and electric distribution system modernization efforts.

The selected candidate will provide technical leadership and oversight for engineers responsible for reviewing medium-voltage customer installations, distributed generation projects, relay protection schemes, electrical studies, and operating requirements associated with high tension service. This includes assessing and implementing new equipment for pilot programs across the service territory for customer installations. This role will be responsible for ensuring engineering excellence, maintaining technical standards, driving process improvements, and supporting the safe and reliable integration of new customer and generation resources onto the Con Edison distribution system.

This role maintains a strong focus on technical leadership, engineering execution, design review, standards development, and stakeholder coordination while supervising a team of engineers and technical professionals.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Supervise and provide technical leadership to engineers responsible for High Tension customer interconnections and DER projects. Prioritize team assignments, monitor workload, and ensure timely completion of engineering deliverables.
  • Provide managerial oversight for engineering initiatives, including equipment evaluations such as for medium-voltage switchgear, application reviews, and implementation of new technologies on the Con Edison distribution system.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives that enhance customer experience while maintaining distribution system reliability and safety. Identify opportunities to improve operational performance, reliability, constructability, maintainability, and safety.
  • Lead the development, review, and maintenance of engineering standards, specifications, procedures, and guidance documents; oversee the review of electrical designs, protection schemes, switchgear applications, grounding, metering, system impact studies, etc.; and ensure compliance with Company requirements (EO-2022, EO-10215), regulatory obligations (NYS SIR), and applicable industry standards (IEEE, ANSI).
  • Provide recommendations regarding new technologies, pilot programs, equipment approvals, and grid modernization initiatives. Review equipment proposals, factory test results, field performance data, and engineering analyses to ensure equipment compliance with Company standards and industry requirements.
  • Direct switchgear pilot programs from concept through implementation by coordinating engineering reviews, testing activities, system reliability assessments, equipment performance evaluations, field evaluations, root-cause failure investigations, protection coordination, lessons learned, and technical recommendations for broader deployment.
  • Interface with customers, developers, consultants, contractors, regulatory agencies, and internal operating organizations to resolve technical issues and support project advancement. Coordinate with vendors, manufacturers, Supply Chain, field organizations, and technical stakeholders to review designs, assess technical exceptions, and support interconnections to the distribution system.
  • Collaborate with standards committees, operating organizations, and industry working groups to establish technical requirements and support long-term distribution system modernization strategies.

Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree Electrical Engineering and a minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering or operations experience. Relevant Work Experience
  • Experience reviewing electrical drawings, engineering calculations, and technical specifications, required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and projects in a dynamic environment, required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to management, customers, developers, and regulatory stakeholders, required.
  • Previous Control Center, System Operation, Electric Operations field, Central Operations field, Generating Plants, and/or Engineering experience, preferred.
  • Experience evaluating medium-voltage customer facilities and distributed generation interconnection projects, preferred.
  • Working knowledge of relay protection systems, revenue metering, grounding systems, switchgear, transformers, and voltage regulation equipment, preferred.
  • Knowledge of electric distribution systems, high tension service design, and energy resource interconnections, preferred.
  • Experience performing or overseeing load flow, fault current, relay coordination, voltage regulation, and system impact studies, preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical teams and developing engineering talent, preferred.
  • Knowledge of Con Edison electric distribution system design and operating philosophies, preferred.
  • Experience with engineering analysis software such as CYME, SINCAL, ETAP, DigSilent, CAPE, or similar tools, preferred.

  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able and willing to travel throughout Company service territory.
  • Must be available to respond during system emergencies.
  • Must be able to visit customer sites, substations, and construction locations.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment and work in all weather conditions as required.
