This position is open for external candidates only to apply.What You Will DoLos Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an experienced Transit Superintendent to direct and oversee transit operations in support of Laboratory transportation requirements. The superintendent will provide leadership for route development, scheduling, dispatch, work execution, personnel oversight, safety, and reliable service delivery.
The superintendent will plan, assign, and direct daily transit operations, coordinating personnel, vehicles, routes, schedules, and resources. You will develop and optimize transit routes based on workforce demand, facility access, roadway conditions, vehicle capabilities, construction impacts, and operational requirements. You will conduct field evaluations to ensure routes are safe, efficient, and executable.
You will provide field oversight of work execution, monitor service performance and changing conditions, identify operational barriers, and implement corrective actions. You will coordinate with Fleet Management and supporting organizations to maintain vehicle availability and operational readiness.
You will supervise assigned personnel, including scheduling and assigning work, providing direction and development, evaluating performance, and ensuring required training and qualifications are maintained. You will establish clear expectations for safety, accountability, operational discipline, and customer service.
You will collaborate with Field Operations, Environment, Safety and Health, Security, Emergency Management, Fleet Management, Facilities, and customer organizations to support transportation needs and improve safety, route efficiency, and service reliability. You will ensure safety and security are integral to all transit activities and stop or suspend work when conditions are unsafe or could compromise Laboratory security.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements: - Demonstrated experience working in transit, passenger transportation, fleet, logistics, or comparable transportation operations.
- Demonstrated experience planning, assigning, directing, and overseeing work in an operational environment, including coordinating personnel, vehicles, schedules, and other resources.
- Demonstrated knowledge of work hazards, safety practices, transportation safety requirements, and work-control principles, including experience identifying unsafe conditions and implementing appropriate controls or corrective actions.
- Demonstrated experience providing field oversight, evaluating work execution, identifying problem areas, investigating alternative solutions, and determining appropriate actions for operational issues.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience, including scheduling and assigning work, providing employee direction and development, evaluating performance, and holding personnel accountable for safe and effective work execution.
- Demonstrated ability to manage changing operational conditions and competing priorities while maintaining safe, reliable transportation services.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with employees, management, customers, and supporting organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and present oral and written reports, operational plans, route information, performance measures, and management briefings.
- Demonstrated ability to learn and utilize computerized work-management, transit scheduling, dispatch, fleet-management, telematics, or similar systems to plan, track, and evaluate work activities.
Training/Certifications - Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger endorsement preferred.
- Transit safety, transportation management, defensive-driving, incident-investigation, fleet-management, or comparable professional certifications are preferred.
Education/ExperiencePosition requires a bachelor's degree and 2 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.
Relevant experience may include transit operations, transportation management, logistics, fleet operations, commercial passenger transportation, work management, or comparable operational leadership.
Desired Qualifications: - Experience directing transit operators, commercial drivers, dispatch personnel, and/or subordinate supervisors.
- Demonstrated experience developing, evaluating, implementing, or managing transit routes and schedules, including the ability to assess roadway conditions, vehicle operating requirements, facility access, traffic conditions, pedestrian interfaces, travel times, and other factors affecting safe route execution.
- Experience developing, modifying, validating, and optimizing fixed-route, shuttle, employee transportation, or similar transit services.
- Experience conducting field evaluations of proposed and existing routes for buses or other large passenger vehicles.
- Working knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Commercial Driver's License (CDL), passenger transportation, and applicable vehicle safety requirements.
- Experience working in an operating hazardous, industrial, government, nuclear, or highly regulated facility.
- Experience conducting field observations, pre-job briefings, post-job reviews, incident investigations, corrective actions, and continuous-improvement activities.
- Experience directing work and understanding collective bargaining agreements.
- Knowledge of environmental, safety, security, and regulatory requirements applicable to transportation activities.
- Experience using computerized work-management, dispatch, route-planning, GPS/AVL, telematics, or fleet-management systems.
- Demonstrated experience using operational data and performance measures to improve safety, service reliability, route efficiency, and work execution.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
