Job Summary

The Assistant Facility Manager (Lead Facilities Support Engineer) for Chicago Union Station is responsible for assistance in managing and overseeing Amtrak's physical assets at Chicago Union Station to improve its core business through enhancing its customer experience and providing a safe, clean, and comfortable environment. The incumbent is responsible for developing a short-, medium- and long-term capital improvement program, as well as planning, procurement, and project management. The Assistant Facility Manager- CUS, will provide oversight performed by other Amtrak entities, property manager contractors, operation and maintenance vendors, and work with procurement to ensure contract compliance. This position will be responsible for supporting Amtrak's Operations, Station Manager and Customer service team in identifying, evaluating, and resolving compliance, operational and programmatic issues within the facility.

Essential Functions

  • Assists in overall direction and management of facility management function including oversight of the facility management provider and sub-contractors. Assist in developing and maintaining performance metrics, standards and service goals, plan (budget) and approve invoices. Assist in maintaining ADA, facility engineering and technical standards-reviews and reports operations against those standards. EPPM Reporting in Masterworks, Site Safety, Overbuilds, Union Labor coordination of scope activities between 399 and Amtrak.
  • Assists in developing and implementing best practices including asset management, preventive and corrective maintenance, capital planning, and life cycle strategies.
  • Assist in managing Facility Management function for physical assets at CUS, including coordination with third party service providers, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Ensures facility compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and standard operating procedures.
  • Provide leadership as a staff member to departments requiring support from facilities operations, repairs and modernization of buildings, grounds, and infrastructure. In this capacity the position qualifies designs and specifications of systems, equipment, finishes, and furnishings that are compliant with Amtrak standards and that can be maintained cost effectively, are sustainable, and represent deployment of technology and energy efficiency. Review building plans and make recommendations for design, commissioning, maintenance, and facility operations.
  • Develops, manages, and implements construction and renovations projects of various scales directly or with the engagement of third-party providers. Coordinate with Capital Delivery, real Estate, ADA, Corporate Security, Digital Technology, and other departments that may have active projects at CUS.
  • Participates in the RFQ and RFP development and evaluation for planning design and construction projects.
  • Review, assure proof of delivery and approve invoices.
  • Collaborate with station managers and internal/external support staff to identify operational and programmatic deficiencies in facilities.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
  • Plus 6 years of relevant work experience, i.e. in facility management role.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
  • Plus 8 years of relevant work experience.
  • Master's degree in business, engineering or related field.
  • Certified Property Manager or Certified Facility Manager.
  • Experience in the Transportation and/or Railroad industry.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective quantitative and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of facilities management, design and construction disciplines.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities and tight deadlines.Experience in managing large complex facilities, directing third party maintenance providers, and managing individual maintenance contracts
  • Effective communication/presentation skills distilling and communicating complex issues to senior level officers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office (Project, PowerPoint, Excel, word, etc.) Familiar with Masterworks and Ariba on Demand.
  • Management experience and leadership abilities. Ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines.

The salary/hourly range is $94,300.00 - $122,256.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
