Job Overview

The Tech Lead DBA will provide technical and organizational leadership for a Team of 4-7 Database Administrators in a large-scale, multi-phase modernization of the company's database platforms. This role will guide teams through the transition from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL on AWS RDS, ensuring operational continuity, strategic alignment, and smooth adoption of the new database ecosystem. The ideal candidate brings strong database expertise, proven leadership experience, and the ability to collaborate across engineering, architecture, and application organizations while shaping standards, processes, and long-term database strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the multi-phase migration program from SQL Server to PostgreSQL on AWS RDS, setting direction, defining timelines, allocating resources, and ensuring minimal downtime and full data integrity across all environments.
  • Oversee and mentor the DBA team responsible for administering both SQL Server and PostgreSQL during the transition, guiding them in performance tuning, monitoring, incident response, capacity planning, and security hardening.
  • Develop and govern migration strategies, including schema modernization, data replication patterns, cutover execution, and application compatibility validation using AWS-native tools and best practices.
  • Provide operational oversight by establishing processes for root-cause analysis, proactive issue detection, and environment stabilization while ensuring consistent and reliable platform operations across both database systems. Off hours support as needed
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, application teams, cloud architects, and leadership stakeholders to ensure database architecture aligns with business goals, future scalability, and security/compliance standards.
  • Drive documentation, standards, and knowledge-sharing frameworks including playbooks, runbooks, and onboarding materials to ensure long-term maintainability and smooth operational handoff once PostgreSQL becomes the primary platform.

Qualifications

  • 10+ Years of Hands-on experience with AWS, specifically RDS for PostgreSQL, MSSQL, and Aurora.
  • 8+ Years of Strong experience with PostgreSQL administration in production environments.
  • Proven track record in production support, including on-call responsibilities.
  • Experience with database monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting tools.
  • Deep knowledge of backup, recovery, and HA/DR strategies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL data platform deployments and management

Preferred

  • Scripting and automation skills in Python.
  • Exposure to other database technologies or data platforms; MSSQL, MongoDB, MySQL.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience migrating MSSQL to PostgreSQL
  • Exposure to other cloud technologies like Azure and GCP

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $175,000-$215,000.00 annually. Final compensation will be based on factors such as relevant experience, skills, education, internal equity, and market data.
