JOB SUMMARY

Interconnection Planning is responsible for evaluating requests to add generation to the transmission system. It also supports the Large Loads that are also utilizing this transmission system to ensure these loads meet the compliance of reliability and regulatory requirements.

This role will provide tactical leadership to ensure the various Interconnection Planning teams (Self-Build/Company Owned projects, Large Loads, Customer DER, and QF/OATT study teams, are coordinated and planned to successfully integrate into the transmission system.

This role will drive consistency in processes, expectations, and performance across interconnection planning teams. Accountable for the end-to-end execution of generator interconnection projects, including study completion, cost allocation, construction coordination, and project close-out.

This role will ensure compliance with RFP programs and interconnection requirements to the transmission system.

This position provides leadership for Grid Transformation, Project Management, Transmission Planning, and Operations, and other key stakeholders in the coordination of the various projects on the transmission system.

This position provides the strategic transmission of technical development of department supervisors and employees.

This position provides input and advice to executive level management regarding the technical merits of these projects for the effective use of the capital budget.

This position also provides support to the members of the Transmission Planning Working Group (TPWG) and works with the members of the Georgia Integrated Transmission System (ITS) to resolve planning issues in the joint planning process.

Responsibilities

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work with Interconnection Planning Transmission teams and supervisors to ensure coordination of the various projects and deliverables for interconnecting to the transmission system.
  • Development of strategic transmission architecture that includes policy, regulatory, and technical requirements to serve as a platform and training for interconnection planning team members.
  • Develop supervisors, technical and future leaders in their understanding and capabilities.
  • Ensure culture, talent development, workforce planning, and understanding of the business needs for Georgia Power Company and its customers are balanced with the affordability impacts.
  • Oversee process, documentation, and use of technology; improve processes to gain efficiency.
  • Collaboration with Transmission Project Management Organization (PMO) to communicate and coordinate efforts.
  • Collaboration with Integrated Grid Planning to communicate and coordinate efforts.
  • Set strategy and engagement through coordination and collaboration with other stakeholder groups including Generation, Legal, and Transmission Policy & Services, to ensure Project Management has projects that can successfully meet the needs of our Transmission system.
  • Proactively build and maintain partnerships with associates in Transmission, Distribution, Generation, ITS, Legal, Land, Environmental, and other organizations across Southern Company.
  • Process oversight working with the Accounting, Finance and Treasury organization to ensure proper assignment, handling and budgeting of costs associated with generation interconnection upgrades.
  • Under technical guidance of the SCS Policy & Services Implementation Project Management group, develop Interconnection Agreements and other related contracts and documentation per FERC guidelines and ensure interconnection contracts are thorough and meet the needs of the customer while meeting Georgia Power and Southern Company's compliance guidelines.
  • Coordinate and participate in activities required per ITS Planning Procedure 13 (Guidelines for Interconnecting New Generation to the Georgia ITS) along with other applicable ITS Planning and Operating Guidelines and Procedures and other generation interconnection activities requested by the ITS Participants.
  • Participate in reviewing ITS Participant Interconnection and Transmission Service Request (TSR) requests and ITS Planning Procedures.
  • This position requires storm response, both on and occasionally off system.
  • This position requires a valid Georgia Driver's License and the ability to drive company owned vehicles and/or rental vehicles to field visits.


Qualifications

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Educational/Certification Requirements:
  • Four (4) year B.S. Engineering Degree or Engineering Technology Degree desired, with Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer's License desired


Experience:

Technical Experience Requirements
  • A minimum of 10 years of Transmission and/or Distribution experience in planning, protection systems, engineering design, operations or maintenance of the electric transmission or distribution system is required. Extensive experience in both areas is preferred.
  • Technical knowledge in P&C Field Services, P&C Applications, Substation Design, System Operations, Transmission Line Design, Transmission Maintenance, Project Management, and Transmission Planning is preferred.
  • Specific experience related to generator interconnection processes and implementation is desired.
