Job Description

Oceaneering's Marine Services Division (MSD) in Chesapeake, VA is seeking a highly skilled Inside Machinist Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of our machine shop. We are a precision manufacturing company specializing in medium-sized, complex, and mission-critical components. Our work is non-repetitive, high-tolerance, and often governed by stringent technical and quality standards. This role requires a hands-on leader with deep technical expertise, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage a dynamic, high-stakes environment. This role may require overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate daily production assignments, ensuring machinists are properly guided and supported in executing complex, non-repeatable machining tasks.


  • Lead the creation, editing, and optimization of CNC programs for both lathe and mill operations using G-code and CAM platforms (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, or equivalent), tailored to unique component geometries and material specifications.


  • Validate CNC programs through first-article inspections, ensuring dimensional accuracy, repeatability, and compliance with engineering drawings, MIL-STDs, and SUBSAFE/SOC requirements.


  • Oversee the setup and proper utilization of CNC and manual machines, ensuring tooling, fixturing, and work-holding strategies are appropriate for the task and aligned with best practices.


  • Instruct, train, and mentor machinists in advanced machining techniques, CNC programming fundamentals, machine setup, and precision measurement methods.


  • Monitor and troubleshoot machining operations, providing hands-on technical support to resolve issues related to tooling, feeds/speeds, surface finish, and tolerance stack-ups.


  • Schedule, prioritize, and control shop production tasks and projects to meet deadlines while optimizing manpower and machine utilization.


  • Ensure efficient use of labor and materials, maintaining accountability for man-hour expenditures and minimizing waste.


  • Recommend and implement improvements in machinery, equipment, tooling, and production methods to enhance quality, safety, and throughput.


  • Review and approve Technical Work Document packages (REC, CWP, TGI) before job release, ensuring full scope coverage and identifying special reference readings for system reinstallation or certification.


  • Audit completed Technical Work Document packages to verify all requirements and objective quality evidence (OQE) are met; sign Re-Entry Control (REC) documentation per OII-MSD Quality Assurance Manual.


  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of production documentation, including time reporting, QA inspection records, and material purchase requests.


  • Maintain and communicate production status updates to the Project Manager, identifying risks and proposing mitigation strategies.


  • Conduct periodic performance evaluations of machinists, providing constructive feedback and enforcing disciplinary actions in accordance with company policies.


  • Assist in estimating labor, material, and scheduling requirements for new and ongoing projects.


  • Operate machine tools and equipment when necessary to support production or training efforts.


  • Support special projects and other duties as assigned, including extended hours and after-hours support as required.


Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma/GED.


  • Minimum three (3) years of supervisory experience in a precision machine shop environment.


  • Minimum ten (10) years of manual and CNC machining experience.


  • Demonstrated knowledge of trade tools, precision instruments, and machining resources.


  • Must be a U.S. citizen who is not a dual citizen of any other country.


Desired

  • Supervisory experience in a Naval or shipyard environment.


  • Formal Apprenticeship Diploma preferred.

Pay Transparency:

Compensation: $42 - $52 an hour

Working Conditions

This position is considered SHOP/INDOORS which is characterized as follows.

  • Primarily indoors during the day and occasionally at night


  • May require working on or near moving equipment and vibrating equipment


  • May be exposed to intense light from welding operations.


  • Occasional exposure to open fire/flames/sparks from welding and grinding operations


  • Depending on the location, may require working in hot, humid conditions (above 90 F degrees) or cold (below 32 F degrees) temperatures


  • Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that may exceed 85 decibels and require the use of hearing protection
