Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. The primary core tasks of the Health and Safety Technician will be to promote safety, security, and quality in all operations; promote teamwork within and across the Laboratory; collaborate with other members of Industrial Safety and Hygiene Deployed Services and promote a positive work environment while delivering exceptional customer service.
The Health and Safety Tec will assist in daily industrial hygiene and safety support through industrial hygiene monitoring to ensure the protection of workers, compliance with Laboratory ES&H requirements, and mission success. The Health and Safety Tec 3 will participate health and safety inspections and investigations to assist in determining deficiencies that require corrective action, report results, and recommend corrective actions. The Health and Safety Tec assists workers in the implementation of integrated work management by gaining an understanding of operations, participating in pre-job walk-downs and pre-job safety briefs, and conducting periodic oversight to ensure compliance. This position is an opportunity for a motivated, innovative, and customer focused individual to support an established Group in the Occupational Safety and Health Deployed Services Group.
Health & Safety Tec 3 ($60,500 - $93,600) The Health and Safety (HS) Technician provides support to line managers and facility personnel by assisting health and safety professionals with collection of personnel air samples, swipe and bulk sampling, area sampling, real-time sampling, and inspection of areas or review of operations to ensure compliance with Laboratory and regulatory requirements.
Health and Safety Tech 4 ($66,100-$103,600) In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the incumbent will be responsible for supporting a variety of programs as needed. The selected candidate will be assigned to one or more programs based on needs. Incumbent has demonstrated skills and knowledge beyond those expected to be found at level 3. Applies extensive knowledge and skills to complete specialized tasks and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Comprehensive understanding of general and technical aspects of the job. Assignments may be broad or narrowly focused, but usually require contributions of original work. Candidates only need to have knowledge and skills in at least one of the program areas. Each candidate is required to promote safety, security, and quality in all operations; promote teamwork within and across the Laboratory.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements: - General knowledge of OSHA requirements, NFPA life safety code, and code of federal regulations 1910 CFR General Industry, and other relevant health and safety regulations and requirements.
- General knowledge of Laboratory and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to industrial hygiene/safety.
- Working knowledge and experience with health and safety controls and the surveillance of related safety measures and requirements.
- Working knowledge and experience with industrial hygiene/safety-related risk assessments and corrective actions.
- Working knowledge of common and unique work hazards, occupational safety practices, and safe operating configurations.
- Ability to research information sources for health effects data applicable to work operations (i.e., safety data sheets, regulations, standards, other agencies, and experts).
- Ability to use automation applications (i.e., spreadsheets, graphics, database management, communication practices, compliance tracking systems).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance
Additional Job Requirements for higher level title: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Substantial knowledge of OSHA requirements, NFPA life safety code, and code of federal regulations 1910 CFR General Industry and 1926 Construction, and other relevant health and safety regulations and requirements.
- Skilled in the preparation and presentation of complex industrial hygiene/safety reports.
- Ability to make decisions and recommendations that significantly affect the content, interpretation, and development of Laboratory policies and programs concerning critical matters and major issues within the health and safety occupational series.
- Well-versed on topics that are considered critical to emerging issues in the specialized aspects of health and safety, which could have significant impact to the Laboratory health and safety.
Education/Experience for lower level: This position requires a minimum of a High School Diploma and 2-4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Technical institute graduate or associates degree may be preferred.
Education/Experience for higher level: Position requires a High School Diploma and 4-6 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education may be expected, including associate's degrees and graduation from technical institutions.
Desired Qualifications:- Working knowledge, and demonstrated application, of DOE requirements related to industrial hygiene and safety.
- Broad knowledge of LANL organizations, operations, and activities.
- Knowledge and application of LANL ESH requirements, including Integrated Work Management and other industrial hygiene and safety procedures.
Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Depth perception, binocular vision, reading vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 hz), standing, walking, use stairs, fixed ladders and ladders up to six feet, ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 35 pounds.
Work Environment: Ability to wear respiratory/protective equipment.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
