Description 1898 & Co. is seeking an experienced Grid Systems Integration Architect / Manager to provide utility grid modernization integration consulting services for electric utility clients. This position will join the Enterprise Systems & Integration team and focus on designing, integrating, and implementing grid operations solutions that enable utility transformation initiatives. The successful candidate will possess strong electric utility business and technology acumen, with expertise in operational technology (OT), operational integration, enterprise integration architecture, and utility operations systems.
This role will provide strategic consulting, technical leadership, integration architecture, solution architecture, and project delivery support for grid modernization programs, technology roadmaps, system integrations, and enterprise transformation initiatives. The position requires strong leadership, collaboration, communication, and client engagement skills, while delivering high-quality solutions aligned with utility business objectives.
This position focuses on grid systems architecture, integration, implementation, and optimization of utility operational systems supporting transmission, distribution, outage management, and distributed energy resource programs. A key focus of this role is leading system integration and implementation services for advanced technology solutions, including but not limited to Energy Management Systems (EMS), Outage Management Systems (OMS), Distribution Management Systems (DMS), Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS), and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).
The role will lead assessments, technology strategy development, integration architecture design, software implementation efforts, and enterprise transformation initiatives for electric utility clients. The Grid Systems Integration Architect / Manager will work closely with utility executives, business stakeholders, technical teams, vendors, and project managers to develop and deliver integrated solutions that support operational excellence, grid reliability, and future-state modernization strategies.
What You'll Do - Lead the architecture, integration, and implementation of utility operational systems including SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, DERMS, AMI, and GIS platforms.
- Develop integration architectures connecting operational technology and enterprise systems using APIs, middleware, messaging frameworks, and cloud-based platforms.
- Assess current-state environments and define future-state technology roadmaps aligned with grid modernization objectives.
- Lead requirements gathering activities to define functional, integration, security, performance, and data architecture needs.
- Design end-to-end integration solutions and data flows supporting interoperability across operational and enterprise systems.
- Support full system implementation lifecycle including design, configuration, testing, deployment, and production support.
- Provide technical leadership for system upgrades, platform migrations, and cloud transformation initiatives.
- Support commissioning, validation, and operational readiness for advanced grid applications such as FLISR, VVO, DER dispatch, and distribution automation.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to client stakeholders by developing executive-level assessments, business cases, and modernization strategies.
- Develop and maintain integration artifacts including interface inventories, system interface definitions, and message specifications, ensuring clear documentation of data exchanges, dependencies, and system interactions.
- Define and document business event models, integration patterns, and message flows to support reliable, scalable interoperability across utility operational and enterprise systems.
- Lead or support project execution using Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid delivery methodologies, contributing to planning, estimation, scheduling, and coordination of integration-focused workstreams.
- Support defect triage, issue resolution, and root cause analysis during implementation and testing phases, working closely with cross-functional teams to address system integration challenges.
- Coordinate and participate in system integration testing activities, including SIT and UAT, while supporting operational readiness efforts such as commissioning, cutover planning, and post-go-live stabilization.
- Collaborate with project managers, technical teams, and vendors to ensure successful delivery of integrated solutions.
- Validate architecture and solutions to ensure alignment with enterprise standards, cybersecurity requirements, and operational goals.
- Develop executive presentations, status reporting, and governance materials to support program decision-making.
- Mentor junior team members and contribute to continuous improvement and innovation across engagements.
- Support business development efforts including pursuits, proposal development, and client engagement activities.

Preferred Experience & Skills - Experience integrating utility operational systems such as SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, DERMS, AMI, and GIS platforms.
- Strong knowledge of enterprise integration architecture including APIs, middleware platforms, messaging frameworks, and cloud integration patterns.
- Understanding of electric utility operations including transmission, distribution, outage management, and distributed energy resource integration.
- Experience supporting large-scale grid modernization or digital transformation initiatives.
- Proven ability to lead technical teams and workstreams in a client-facing consulting environment.
- Experience developing executive-level strategy, technology roadmaps, and investment recommendations.
- Strong communication, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence executive decision-making.
- Familiarity with integration platforms such as MuleSoft, Boomi, Azure Integration Services, Kafka, or similar technologies.
- Experience with major utility system vendors such as GE, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Oracle, or similar platforms.
- Knowledge of utility cybersecurity frameworks and OT security practices including NERC CIP.
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field from an accredited program, and 7 years of relevant experience required.
- Architecture and integration skills, including areas such as data architecture, cloud architecture, middleware, communications, or other architectural methods and practices.
- Understanding of current and emerging associated technologies to manage and deliver quality enterprise solutions in both Information Technology (IT) and Operations Technology (OT) domains.
- Experience with a variety of project execution methodologies.
- Experience with leading-edge application(s), operations technology and solutions utilizing various industry standard tools.
- Experience developing executive-level technology assessments, roadmap strategies focusing on enterprise and/or operational technologies.
- Strong ability to influence or lead project execution.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
