The opportunityWe're looking for a graphics engineer to join the Graphics Kernel API team. The team works on a standalone, low-level graphics abstraction layer that gives Unity a single, consistent interface across every platform and graphics driver we support.
The team owns the cross-driver abstraction that keeps behavior consistent across every backend, the validation layer and conformance test suite that catch misuse, and the specifications and design records that document how it all fits together. It's the layer every driver team implements against, and the one the rest of the engine is built on.
You'll work alongside other graphics developers and the individual driver teams on clean, efficient APIs - keeping them consistent across a wide range of hardware, and making sure they're testable, debuggable and well documented. It's a good place to build real depth in cross-platform rendering.
What you'll be doing- Develop and maintain the common API layer and the cross-driver abstraction layer beneath it, helping keep behavior consistent across D3D12, Vulkan, Metal, WebGPU and console backends.
- Contribute to the validation layer and conformance test suite, so that misuse is caught early and every driver can be held to the same contract.
- Work with the lower-level driver teams to make sure new API additions are practical to implement and perform well on real hardware.
- Improve the performance, testability and stability of the systems you work on, from the API surface down to how commands reach the driver.
- Contribute to the specifications and documentation that keep the API coherent as it evolves.
- Take part in technical design reviews and code reviews.
- Work with stakeholders and higher-level engine teams to understand requirements, plan work, communicate progress and solve problems as they come up.
What we're looking for- Software engineering fundamentals, and experience writing multi-threaded C++.
- An understanding of real-time 3D graphics programming, including modern GPU architecture and resource management.
- Experience with a modern graphics API such as Direct3D 12, Vulkan or Metal.
- The ability to diagnose bugs and performance issues using industry-standard tools.
- A proactive, solution-oriented approach, good communication skills, and a real interest in rendering and cross-platform development.
- A willingness to jump into unfamiliar technical areas.
Graphics fundamentals matter more to us here than experience with any one API. If you've worked in D3D12 or Metal and haven't touched Vulkan - or the other way round - we'd still like to hear from you.
You might also have- Experience writing conformance tests, validation layers, or other tooling that holds multiple implementations to a shared specification.
- Familiarity with CPU and GPU debugging and profiling tools such as RenderDoc, PIX, or platform-specific captures.
- Hands-on experience with Unity or another real-time 3D engine.
