Based in our Washington, D.C. bureau, this reporter will help unearth Washington’s biggest secrets and reveal how the government’s power centers operate behind closed doors.

The ideal candidate will possess an insatiable curiosity about geopolitics and the clandestine world, and a proven ability to bring readers inside the high-stakes frontlines of intelligence and diplomacy.  We are looking for a reporter who can bring to life stories  that sharpens our audience’s understanding of what the CIA, the Pentagon and other national security agencies are up to, alongside smart insights that advance major breaking news events.

Vital to this job’s success is the ability to deliver journalism that everyone talks about.

The job will report to the Washington Enterprise Editor and collaborate closely with our talented national security, tech, and corporate reporting teams.

You Will:
  • Develop original, agenda-setting enterprise and investigative stories that reveal the inner workings of the U.S. intelligence apparatus and defense establishments.

  • Find angles to advance major breaking national security news under tight deadlines. In addition to working on ambitious projects, this position will also be expected to file regularly and take part in the daily report when the news cycle demands it.

  • Unearth and report fresh features on clandestine operations and cyber threats.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the bureau and around the world to conceive and execute ambitious, large-scale projects and series showing how national security impacts global markets and politics.

You Have:
  • At least 7 years of professional journalism experience, with a distinct track record of dominating a highly competitive beat.

  • Deep sourcing within the intelligence community, military, Capitol Hill or cybersecurity sectors, and a proven ability to develop sources.

  • Use data, digital forensics, or investigative techniques to find original approaches to complex subjects.

  • Expertise in translating technical programs into authoritative, clear, and gripping narratives for a sophisticated global audience.

  • A collaborative spirit and a desire to work with visuals, graphics, and data teams.

To Apply:

Please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach this role, and five clips that demonstrate your best work by September 25th. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage early submission as the position may be filled before the deadline.
