What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either Engineer Technologist 1 or Engineer Technologist 2, depending on the skills of the selected candidate(s). Additional job responsibilities, outlined below, will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Engineer Technologist 1 Salary Range: $87,800 - $143,000

The Engineer Technologist 1 is responsible for ensuring that the technical aspects of construction and maintenance projects are executed in full conformance with the Approved Project Documents by monitoring facility maintenance and construction activities. This is accomplished by providing input during scoping, design, execution, and project closeout to ensure baseline documents are accurate, design documents are adhered to, and as-built configurations are verified. Engineers expedite project execution by identifying issues, coordinating technical solutions, and providing timely guidance to the constructor through approved procedures. The level 1 Engineer Technologist will require a basic understanding of field engineering principles and have a aptitude to apply these principles in the execution of the job.

Engineer Technologist 2 Salary Range: $96,600 - $158,000

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level, the level 2 Engineer Technologist will require a demonstrated understanding of field engineering principles and needs to have applied these principles in a professional environment.

  • Aptitude in collaborative problem solving to resolve nuclear facility and infrastructure engineering issues in the field as the liaison between design engineers and the constructor.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineer Technologist 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction engineering principles.
  • Demonstrated expertise in reading and understanding engineering design documents, drawings, and specifications to ensure their completeness and constructability.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting construction industry specifications, construction means and methods, and national construction codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in conducting field verifications of construction work to oversee, facilitate, and enforce compliance with drawings, specifications, national codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in collaborative problem solving to resolve nuclear facility engineering issues in the field as the liaison between design engineers and the constructor.

Education Experience at lower level: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education Experience at higher level: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Design and/or construction experience in nuclear, accelerator, laboratory, or industrial facility operations.
  • Fundamental knowledge of engineering and construction techniques, applications of engineering and construction methods, and application of technology and tools to conventional facility operation and construction operations.
  • Experience with design and/or installation of facility and infrastructure systems.
  • Awareness of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular construction discipline.
  • Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to review material take-offs against project documents to ensure compliance with design and specifications.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): General Physical Mobility, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending. Specific Physical Mobility use of both hands, use of both arms, use of both legs, use of both feet, carry/lift up to 20 pounds.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which will involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager based on needs for the facilities. This position has a potential to be shift work with one of the following schedules:
  • B Shift: Night 4 x 10 hours Tues - Fri. 5:00pm - 3:30am
  • D Shift: Night 4 x 10 hours Fri. - Mon. 5:00pm - 3:30am
    • *Schedules will be discussed during the interview process.

Position Commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
