Q-6 is offering an exciting opportunity to be a part of the Detonation Science and Technology Group as an Engineering Technologist. You will work closely with a diverse group of engineers, technologists and technicians on timing and firing control systems, high explosive detonator testing, facility infrastructure, high voltage and laser operations to support experiments. Successful candidates will work in areas that directly involve or contain hazards that have high consequences for safety, such as chemicals, high explosives, high-power lasers, and high-energy devices.
The Detonation Science and Technology Group (Q-6) serves the Laboratory and the Nation providing the knowledge base and component design responsibilities for the Nuclear Weapons Program and other critical national security areas. The Group's capabilities include design engineering for nuclear weapon detonators and detonator cable assemblies, design, fabrication, qualification, and installation of test fire control systems, pulse power engineering, advanced detonator design and testing, and applied problem solving. Additional capabilities include expertise in the detonation science and physics of detonator energetic materials, and engineering responsibility for the cradle to grave care of the detonators and detonator cable assemblies used by Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The selected candidate will provide high explosive experiment support in areas related to detonator qualification, characterization, or development activities, including filling the role as a Firing Leader or Firing Person In Charge (PIC), at a local Q-6 facility. This will include serving as an HE Handler, monitoring and correcting diagnostics, troubleshooting electrical equipment, and ensuring safety of individuals in an explosives area.
Ideal applicants will have experience with the following duties:
- Apply engineering and scientific principles to solve technical problems supporting LANL detonation science missions.
- Support engineers and projects on moderately complex assignments requiring initiative, independent judgment, and teamwork.
- Perform testing, maintenance, and engineering support activities in high-hazard experimental facilities.
- Setting up and executing sensitive electrical or optical (laser) experiments, integrating specialized diagnostic and measurement equipment.
- Preparing and maintaining technical documentation; including procedures, schematics, drawings, or test reports.
- Leading or supporting hazardous test operations involving high explosives, including execution of high-rigor detonator performance test series.
- Demonstrated capability to interact with multiple disciplines to ensure the safety of individuals in an explosives area.
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 1 (ET-1) ($87,800 - $143,000): - Demonstrated initiative and sound technical judgment while working independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
