Full Job Description
About the Role

As Engineering Manager of the Product Engineering Team, you will lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for building and scaling Genesis's agentic drug discovery platform. This is a leadership role that combines people management, technical leadership, product partnership, and hands-on contribution.

Unlike a traditional engineering management position, this role is intentionally structured to maintain significant individual technical impact. Approximately:
  • 20% of your time will be dedicated to recruiting and organizational growth
  • 20% to roadmap management and cross-functional planning
  • 20% to people leadership and team development
  • 40% to high-leverage individual contribution through architecture, technical strategy, system design, and shipping production code on critical initiatives

You will work closely with engineering, product, design, machine learning, and scientific stakeholders to define roadmaps, prioritize features, and deliver high-impact capabilities for our users. Success in this role requires balancing long-term platform investments with rapid product iteration, helping the team deliver exceptional user experiences while maintaining a scalable and reliable technical foundation.

Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & High-Leverage Individual Contribution (40%)
  • Provide technical leadership on system architecture, platform design, scalability, reliability, and engineering best practices.
  • Act as a hands-on technical leader, contributing directly through software development, architecture, design reviews, technical strategy, and critical engineering initiatives.
  • Write, review, and ship production code for high-impact features, platform capabilities, and foundational systems.
  • Drive delivery of user-facing features and platform capabilities that accelerate molecular design and drug discovery workflows.
  • Partner with machine learning and scientific teams to integrate advanced AI capabilities into product workflows.
  • Establish effective engineering processes that enable predictable delivery while maintaining flexibility in a fast-moving environment.
  • Ensure high standards for software quality, testing, observability, security, and operational excellence.
  • Lead complex technical investigations and help unblock the team on high-impact architectural and implementation challenges.

Roadmap Management & Cross-Functional Execution (20%)
  • Partner with Product, Design, Machine Learning, and Scientific teams to define product strategy, roadmap priorities, and execution plans.
  • Drive prioritization and planning processes that align engineering investments with company objectives.
  • Communicate roadmap progress, technical strategy, risks, and business impact to stakeholders across the organization.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand user needs and translate them into impactful product experiences.

People Leadership & Team Development (20%)
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of software engineers and computational chemists building Genesis's agentic drug discovery platform.
  • Create a collaborative, inclusive, and growth-oriented team culture focused on ownership, learning, and execution.
  • Own performance management, coaching, feedback, and career development for team members.
  • Facilitate technical decision-making and help the team navigate tradeoffs between speed, quality, maintainability, and business impact.

Recruiting & Organizational Growth (20%)
  • Recruit, onboard, and retain exceptional engineering and scientific talent.
  • Develop hiring strategies and partner with leadership to build a world-class Product Engineering organization.
  • Participate actively in sourcing, interviewing, and closing candidates.
  • Help shape team structure, organizational design, and growth plans.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Computational Chemistry, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 2+ years in an engineering leadership or people management role.
  • Experience leading cross-functional product engineering teams delivering customer-facing software products.
  • Strong technical background in modern software architecture, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and full-stack application development.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain technically hands-on, including writing and shipping production code, while managing and growing engineering teams.
  • Experience partnering closely with Product Management and Design to define roadmaps, prioritize features, and deliver impactful user experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance technical excellence with pragmatic execution and business outcomes.
  • Experience hiring, mentoring, and developing engineers across different levels of seniority.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, product, machine learning, and scientific teams.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, make thoughtful tradeoffs, and drive alignment across diverse stakeholders.
  • Interest in applying technology to scientific discovery and willingness to learn the drug discovery domain.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building developer tools, AI-powered products, agentic systems, scientific software, or technical productivity platforms.
  • Experience working with modern frontend frameworks, backend services, cloud-native architectures, and AI-enabled applications.
  • Experience collaborating with computational chemists, machine learning researchers, or scientific software teams.
  • Familiarity with drug discovery, molecular modeling, cheminformatics, computational chemistry, or related scientific domains.
