Full Job Description
In order to deliver Render to our users, we must first provide the best internal developer platform for engineers to move fast, confidently, reliably, and securely along paved paths with the right set of tools, observability and guardrails. As Engineering Manager for the newly formed Platform team, you'll lead a growing group of talented engineers - both established team members and future hires - who are energized by the opportunity to build this space alongside you.

Together, you will modernize and bring Render's internal developer platform and shared production infrastructure (observability, CI/CD, developer environments, storage, and more) from good to great. Because the landscape we operate in is evolving rapidly, we build infrastructure that is modular and adaptable, able to support a product direction that is itself responding to a fast-moving market without over-indexing on any single bet. This team will have tremendous impact; unlike most infrastructure teams that build for internal consumers, our infrastructure is the product. Not only will you be enhancing the velocity and impact of your fellow Render engineers, but the 4.5 million developers using our platform as well.

This role blends strong technical leadership with product thinking: you'll partner closely with other engineering teams as well as product managers to translate user needs into high-quality, scalable systems that developers rely on every day. You'll be responsible for guiding technical direction, developing engineers, and ensuring the team ships meaningful improvements quickly while maintaining the high standards that define Render's platform. The ideal candidate brings a strong engineering background, a deep sense of ownership, and a passion for building products that developers love.

What You'll Do
  • Lead and grow a team of platform engineers, supporting their development through mentorship, feedback, and clear technical guidance.
  • Drive execution on key product initiatives from ideation through launch, balancing speed with high standards of reliability and quality.
  • Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement across engineering practices and team processes.
  • Engage deeply in technical discussions, guiding system design decisions and helping the team navigate architectural tradeoffs.
  • Stay up to date with relevant industry trends, emerging tools, and developer practices that will inform future team learning and opportunities for investment.
  • Help the team break down complex problems into incremental milestones that deliver value quickly while supporting long-term platform evolution.
  • Ensure teams maintain a strong understanding of the developer experience and reliability, security, and velocity impact of the features they build.
  • Partner closely with other teams like Runtime, Security, and Product to understand needs, align priorities, and ensure delivery of impactful features and solutions through thoughtful technical solutions and product roadmaps.
What We're Looking For
  • 8+ years as an Engineer on an Infrastructure or similarly shaped team shipping products or features for other developers.
  • 4+ years of experience managing people and developing engineers, including hiring, mentorship, and performance management.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, product, and design.
  • Strong technical background with the ability to engage deeply in system design, architecture, and engineering tradeoffs.
  • Ability to translate engineering goals and user needs into roadmaps and shipped features.
  • A strong sense of ownership and accountability for both team outcomes and long-term system health.
  • Experience improving Reliability and/or Developer Experience through tooling, processes, and team practices.
  • Deep experience with open source technologies supporting an internal platform tool or cluster, build & deployment systems, CI/CD, observability, and/or configuration management.
Nice-to-Haves
  • Background working on highly scalable distributed systems or infrastructure platforms.
  • Experience on teams managing large fleets of developer environments, sandboxes, or testing ecosystems.
  • Experience building platforms and/or products used directly by developers.

If this role excites you but you don't meet every single requirement, we'd still love to hear from you-your unique experience might be just what we need.

Benefits
  • 4 weeks of paid vacation.
  • 14 weeks of fully paid parental leave for all parents to bond with a newly born, adopted, or fostered child. We will also work with you to create a supportive plan of return.
  • Long-term disability, life insurance, and 401K plans.
  • 100% employer-paid medical coverage and 99% employer-paid dental and vision coverage for you and a dependent. FSAs and HSAs are available as well.
  • Monthly lifestyle stipend for wellness, mental health and therapy, hobbies, etc.
  • Monthly cell phone and internet subsidy.
  • Commuter benefits for Renders in the Bay Area, and home office stipends for remote Renders.
  • Continuous learning benefits & related support.
