An overview of this role

In this role, you'll build, manage, and support a globally distributed engineering team delivering high-quality, reliable platform capabilities and user experiences. You'll hire and onboard talent, guide technical delivery, shape team workflows, and align engineering execution with product management, design, and business goals. Your work will help engineers take responsibility for outcomes, grow continuously, and improve operational and delivery excellence in a remote, asynchronous environment.
What you'll do
  • Build, manage, and mentor a globally distributed engineering team, creating an environment where team members can thrive and advance their careers.
  • Hire, onboard, and develop engineers while maintaining high standards for quality, accountability, and psychological safety.
  • Partner with product management, product design, and cross-functional engineering teams to align technical direction, shape roadmaps, and deliver against commitments.
  • Guide engineers on system architecture, code quality, performance, security, and maintainability across frontend and backend disciplines.
  • Manage and refine agile, remote, and asynchronous workflows, maintaining delivery cadence and addressing blockers, backlogs, or delayed execution early.
  • Encourage and integrate AI capabilities and modern developer tooling into daily workflows to improve productivity, innovation, and efficiency.
  • Conduct regular one-on-ones, provide continuous, actionable feedback, and support career progression through coaching and skill development.
  • Maintain visibility into operational health and reliability, participating in system availability and incident management rotations as needed.

The Core DevOps team at GitLab owns core repository capabilities, from Git command-line operations to web-based code exploration. Our roadmap includes improvements to existing features, maintainability, accessibility, performance, and workflows for teams using AI-assisted development tools.
