As Director of Engineering, you will own the technical strategy, design, delivery, and operation of Roblox's storage systems. The challenge is scale, efficiency, reliability, and innovation all at once. We are mostly on-prem but also in the cloud - yes, we're actually building a lot of this ourselves, and yes, we know how hard that is. We've got the scale and the talent to do it.
You've spent your career deep in storage: databases, caches, queues, object storage. You understand that reliability is the most important feature of any system. You care deeply about the success of the internal and external customers who depend on these systems. You're excited to shepherd a fast-growing platform from the nearly 1 exabyte we have today to a multi-exabyte deployment that will power some of the most interesting AI workloads in the industry.
You will
- Own the technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for Roblox's storage systems, including distributed databases, caches, queues, object storage, and encryption infrastructure
- Ensure our storage platform scales by orders of magnitude while remaining reliable and efficient
- Partner closely with Data Platform, Infrastructure, and product engineering teams to align storage capabilities with Roblox's technical and business needs
- Build, grow, and retain a world-class storage engineering team - and develop the next generation of technical leaders within it
- Drive operational excellence: define and hold the bar on reliability, on-call practices, and incident response
- Own your systems end-to-end, including participation in on-call rotation for critical incidents
You have
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field
- 10+ years of experience in storage, infrastructure, or distributed systems roles, including hands-on experience building and operating custom database systems - not just deploying off-the-shelf solutions - plus depth in at least several of: caching systems, object storage, message queues, or data streaming
- 5+ years in engineering leadership, managing teams through ambiguity to deliver critical, production-scale systems
- A track record of building reliable, high-availability systems at significant scale (millions of users, petabyte-scale data, or equivalent)
- Strong operational instincts - you raise the bar on reliability and execution, not just vision
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners and earn trust across engineering, product, and leadership
- Comfort with ambiguity and a bias toward learning: you go deep on tech stacks that are new to you and bring others along
