Department: Facilities Ops Admin

Duties & Responsibilities:

VCU's Facilities Management Department is seeking to hire an Electrical/Analytics Engineer.

The Electrical/Analytics Engineer is primarily responsible for the design and implementation of VCU's long term concentrated upgrade and repair of university buildings (CURB). This includes the design and implementation of a strategy to combine retro-commissioning (RCx) of existing buildings with the identification and implementation of energy conservation measures (ECMs) to achieve lower operating costs while increasing indoor environmental quality and building performance and achieving VCU's commitment to lower our environmental impact and increase sustainability of operations. The Electrical Engineer oversees the measurement and verification (M&V) of executed ECMs to ensure implementation was successful. The position is responsible for design and implementation of a continuous commissioning program to maintain achieved improvements in operations and energy savings. In order to achieve these objectives, the Electrical Engineer oversees the university's building automation systems (BAS) architecture and infrastructure. The position is responsible for managing the growing convergence of BAS and VCU Enterprise IT networks in order to maintain both reliability and maintainability of HVAC systems and compliance with VCU information security policies.

Additional responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Building Automation Infrastructure Oversight
  • Document VCU's building automation standards for new construction and ensure compliance with VCU It's network security standards
  • Maintain campus BAS servers
  • Coordinate installation of BAS and embedded device(loT) connection to VCU IP network
  • Maintain FMD compliance with VCU InfoSec security policies for existing BAS systems

Data Engineering
  • Design and build data integration pipelines and workflows to facilitate data analysis for ECM discovery, retro and continuous commissioning, and fault detection and diagnostics

Retro/Continuous Commissioning
  • Implement Fault Detection and Diagnostics platform to aid in the identification and elimination of poor asset performance and energy waste
  • Use retro commissioning to correct defective performance and use continuous commissioning to maintain performance improvements and related savings

Energy Conservation Measures
  • Identify opportunities to implement system upgrades or changes to lower VCU's energy consumption and environmental impact

Management
  • Supervise, train, and coach VCU's Energy Manager in their role
  • Coordinate between FMD-Automation, VCU IT, and Facilities Operations to maintain secure access to building automation assets

Special Assignments
  • Working with Facilities Operations to integrate multi-vendor automation systems into a cohesive single system interface for all FMD users
  • Currently in year 2 of a multiyear project to use College of Engineering senior capstone projects to facility data engineering efforts
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field with significant coursework in statistics or data science required, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Association of Energy Engineers Certified Energy Manager or ability to obtain CEM certification within one year of hire required
  • Several years experience in HVAC related engineering required
  • Knowledge of building automation systems and networking architecture required (JCI Metasys, Siemens Desigo, and Tridium Niagara preferred)
  • Knowledge of Information Technologies including Web Servers (IIS preferred), virtual machines, SQL databases, and LDAP user management (Active Directory preferred)
  • Knowledge of IT networking protocols including UDP/TCP/IP, TLS, and BACnet/IP required
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • State of Virginia Driver's License required
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Science in Data Science, Mathematics, or Statistics preferred or extensive postgraduate level work in statistics, modeling, and time series analysis techniques
  • Ability to write basic data computer programs in R, Python, or related language with open-source libraries for data analysis
  • Five (5) years' experience in HVAC related engineering preferred
  • Experience with Energy Conservation Measure identification and implementation
  • Measurement and Verification Certification or related experience preferred
  • Project Management Institute certification or related experience preferred
  • Experience working in a research and teaching environment is preferred
  • Experience supervising technical professionals and skilled HVAC/BAS trades preferred

Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000
