The Foundation of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Royal College Foundation- RCF)

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), RCF, the Director, Development is responsible for leading the long-term strategy and ongoing business operations for the RCF. The incumbent will be accountable to the ED and the RCF's Board of Directors that collectively provides strategic oversight and advice on operational issues impacting the Foundation. You will be responsible for strategic planning and direction for all facets of the Foundation's administration, including operational, financial, risk, and resource planning as well as stewardship of donors, partners and staff. The incumbent will provide leadership and inspiration by building relationships based on respect, integrity, accountability, and collaboration.

As Director, Development, you will lead and execute the Foundation's philanthropic strategy, driving sustainable revenue growth and aligning fundraising with the Royal College's priorities. The role oversees a full development portfolio-major gifts, member giving, partnerships, and campaigns-while building strong, data-informed donor relationships across the health and academic sectors.
The Director leads the development function of the Royal College Foundation, building the systems, processes, and culture for a high-performing fundraising operation. In the start-up phase, the role establishes core infrastructure, including revenue models, fundraising priorities, and a strong case for support aligned with the Royal College's brand and member experience.
Working with senior leadership, the Board, and key stakeholders, the Director aligns donor investments with institutional priorities and measurable outcomes, positioning the Foundation as a trusted partner in advancing specialist medical education and care in Canada.

• Lead and execute strategic initiatives aligned with the organizational plan, with authority to make high-impact decisions and drive long-term success.
• Oversee directorate direction and operations, build key partnerships, and represent the organization externally to strengthen its position and reputation.
• Advise and partner with the Board and volunteers to strengthen fundraising strategy, donor engagement, and alignment with long-term goals.
• Build volunteer capacity and drive cross-functional collaboration to support integrated, high-impact advancement initiatives.
• Lead and execute integrated campaigns, securing major investments and aligning initiatives with organizational priorities and brand positioning.
• Oversee campaign readiness, donor communications, and external representation to strengthen engagement, visibility, and impact.
• Set performance targets, oversee operational and financial planning, and report on progress to leadership and the Board to ensure accountability and sustainability.
• Lead financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and risk oversight, to support sound decision-making and compliance.

Does this sound like you?
• Bachelor's degree combined with project management training and experience in business or public administration, fundraising or foundation management, or related field.
• Minimum 10 years of progressive leadership experience in fundraising, advancement, or foundation management, client relationship cultivation/stewardship including scaling from the ground up a foundation in a national member-based organization.
• Proven track record in securing major gifts and leading successful fundraising campaigns.
• Strong business acumen and analytical skills, combined with a disciplined approach to corporate and operational decision making and reporting
• Strong leadership, diplomatic and motivational skills including the ability to lead up, across and down multiple units within an organization.
• Demonstrated people management skills with the ability to lead, train and coach staff and help them to acquire the skills to meet the unit's requirements.
• Strong experience presenting to executives, donors, decision makers and demonstrated communication skills; both written and oral with all levels of an organization.
• Ability to build and maintain relationships across business groups internally and externally, demonstrating an ability to influence a variety of constituents to adopt new practices and behaviors through different means and interactions.
• Ability to think strategically and execute tactically, exercising sound judgement and the ability to make difficult decisions, often with competing priorities, in a timely manner.
• Demonstrated ability to effect change within an organization, using creativity in order to lead the design of new programs and services and formulate novel approaches to solving unique, complex problems.
• Hybrid work environment. Onsite presence is required with flexibility to work from home.
• Travel will be required to support the mandate of the Foundation. Approximately 2-4 trips annually (domestically) and potentially 1 trip annually outside Canada to engage with our international members and contributors.
