Base Pay Range:$125,000-$175,000
The Director, Accounting leads the company's accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal control framework to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial information. This role is a key financial leader and trusted business partner, responsible for maintaining the integrity of the company's financial records while supporting scalability, compliance, and strategic decision-making. The Controller develops and leads a high-performing accounting team and promotes a culture of accountability, integrity, and continuous improvement.
As the Director of Accounting, your essential job functions will include the following:Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations- Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
- Oversee all core accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, revenue recognition, and complex accounting areas as applicable.
- Manage annual external audits and serve as the primary point of contact with external auditors.
- Analyze financial results, identify trends and variances, and communicate insights to the VP of Finance.
- Maintain and update accounting policies and procedures, including implementation of new accounting standards.
Internal Controls, Audit & Compliance• Design, implement, and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure reliable financial reporting.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and industry-specific regulations.
• Identify financial and operational risks and recommend mitigation strategies in partnership with Finance leadership.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis
- Partner with the VP of Finance on annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning.
- Monitor performance against budget and forecast, proactively highlighting risks and opportunities.
- Provide ad hoc financial analysis and modeling to support business initiatives and leadership decisions.
Business Partnership & Process Improvement
- Partner with operational, sales, regulatory, compliance, IT, and other functional leaders to support business growth and execution.
- Collaborate with risk management and actuarial resources to provide financial insights for risk reporting, program and pricing reviews, and relationships with underwriters.
- Identify and lead accounting process improvements, system enhancements, and automation initiatives to improve efficiency and scalability.
- Support financial systems implementations and upgrades, ensuring strong controls and data integrity.
Team Leadership Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team through coaching, performance management, and professional development.
- Establish clear goals and expectations aligned with aligned with organizational priorities.
- Foster a collaborative, high-accountability culture grounded in ethical behavior and continuous improvement.
Other Duties as Assigned Position Requirements- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- CPA required; MBA preferred
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 7 years in a people leadership role
- Strong experience with GAAP, internal controls, and financial systems in a complex or regulated environment
- Proven accounting leadership and people development capability
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Excellent communication and cross-functional partnership skills
