ABOUT THE POSITION

Database Architect

VHB is seeking a Database Architect to join our Technology Enablement team. This is an exciting opportunity to design and lead enterprise data architecture solutions that support the markets VHB serves, including Transportation, Energy, State/Local Government and Real Estate. In this role, you will help shape scalable, secure, and high-performing database environments that enable innovative digital solutions and data-driven decision-making across the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain enterprise database architectures, data models, and data integration strategies
  • Lead the planning and implementation of scalable, secure, and high-performing database solutions across multiple business applications
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, vendors, and leadership to support enterprise data initiatives and system integration efforts
  • Design and support databases and data architectures for transportation safety and crash data management systems, including data integration, reporting, analytics, and data quality initiatives
  • Develop and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models aligned with business and technical requirements
  • Define database standards, governance practices, naming conventions, and data quality processes
  • Analyze current database environments and recommend improvements for performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability
  • Support data warehousing, ETL processes, and integration of new data sources into existing enterprise systems
  • Provide guidance on database administration, indexing strategies, query optimization, backup/recovery planning, and security best practices
  • Review and evaluate business requirements related to data usage, reporting, analytics, and system performance
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and database design specifications
  • Partner with development teams to ensure alignment between application architecture and database architecture
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the Technology Enablement team

Skills and Attributes
  • Knowledge of database architecture principles, data modeling methodologies, and data governance best practices
  • Experience with performance tuning, query optimization, indexing, and database troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with ETL processes, data warehousing concepts, and enterprise system integration
  • Understanding of database security, backup/recovery strategies, and high-availability solutions
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a collaborative team environment
  • Self-motivated with strong attention to detail and a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of directly-related professional database management experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field
  • Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server and relational database technologies including Cloud Platform (Microsoft Azure or AWS), SSIS packages, SSRS, SSAS, and PowerBI
  • Experience with Restful API database Integration
  • Experience or knowledge of .net core API's preferred
  • Strong technical expertise with relational databases, SQL development, database administration, and enterprise data modeling
  • Experience working with transportation crash data, roadway safety systems, or safety management and analytics platforms preferred
  • Familiarity with crash data integration, data governance, reporting, and performance measures related to transportation safety initiatives is a plus
  • Experience supporting enterprise applications and collaborating with software engineering teams
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms and modern data architecture practices is a plus
  • Installed, configured, and maintained Microsoft SQL Server environments, ensuring database performance, reliability, security, and availability across enterprise applications.
  • Experience within the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry is preferred but not required

The full-time annual base salary range for this position is $120,000 to $175,000 if located in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts or Washington D.C and $105,000 to $155,000 if located in Florida or Georgia. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.

We may consider candidates from another VHB office or state location not currently listed.

Annual base salary is one component of VHB's Total Rewards package. In addition to base pay, eligible employees may receive annual incentive compensation bonuses, spot bonuses, and merit-based salary increases, providing opportunities to increase earnings beyond base pay.
