Ideal Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience managing enterprise-scale, cloud-native data platforms with a focus on enabling data democratization through modern architectures. You understand that data mesh isn't just a technology implementation, it's a sociotechnical paradigm that requires both technical excellence and collaborative skills.

You thrive when:
  • Solving complex federation challenges that span cloud and on-premises environments
  • Optimizing performance across distributed query engines and storage layers
  • Balancing centralized governance with decentralized domain ownership
  • Working independently with minimal supervision while knowing when to escalate or collaborate

You bring experience with:
  • Managing Databricks environments at scale, particularly Unity Catalog in multi-workspace scenarios
  • Configuring and tuning Starburst/Trino for optimal query federation performance
  • Designing data access patterns that serve diverse analytical use cases
  • Hybrid cloud architectures where cloud-native and on-premises systems must interoperate seamlessly

You communicate effectively by:
  • Translating complex technical concepts for non-DBA audiences
  • Creating documentation that empowers self-service while maintaining standards
  • Educating domain teams on platform capabilities without being prescriptive about their data products

What Success Looks Like in This Role:

In your first 30 days:
  • Gain comprehensive understanding of the existing data mesh architecture, Unity Catalog configuration, and federation topology
  • Establish relationships with key data domain owners and understand their primary use cases
  • Complete knowledge transfer sessions on current database environments, recurring issues, and operational procedures
  • Identify quick wins for performance optimization or documentation gaps

In your first 90 days:
  • Take ownership of day-to-day database administration across all environments
  • Implement at least one significant optimization to federation performance or storage gateway efficiency
  • Establish monitoring and alerting baselines that proactively identify issues
  • Deliver knowledge-sharing session to development teams on platform best practices

In your first 6 months:
  • Become the go-to expert for Unity Catalog, Starburst, and data mesh platform questions
  • Lead at least one strategic initiative (e.g., new domain onboarding, major upgrade, disaster recovery enhancement)
  • Reduce database-related incidents through proactive optimization and improved operational procedures
  • Build trusted relationships where domain teams seek your guidance on data architecture decisions

Long-term success indicators:
  • Platform uptime and performance consistently meet or exceed SLAs
  • Self-service data access increases while maintaining security and governance standards
